So coming with questions about dial etiquette after the dialgate appeared on the Rules forum asking on what is proper etiquette. My initial response is that "its in the tournament rules" however I had to stop myself and ask if it still was. I remember reading about handling dials in competitive play but could not find them in the current set of FAQs. Ever since the reversal of the FAQ decision on autoblaster cannons I decided to keep an archive of X-wing FAQ for reference and my academic discipline (what little I have) decided to kick in. So previous version of tournament regulations X-wing Standard Play Tournament Rules (ver 4.0 4/21/2015) they elaborated on players being allowed to place dials on their pilot card instead of next to the model for Faction Mirror Matches to avoid accidentally picking up an opponent's model. That rule has been omitted in X-wing Tournament Regulations (ver 1.0 4/26/2016). But again those weren't the passages I was looking for. So I went all the way back to when all X-wing FAQ rules were formed into one encompassing FAQ before they were split up into general, escalation, epic, and tournament FAQs. This is what I found.
Taken from X-wing FAQ ver 2.1 7/16/2014 pg 9 under the section competitive play ( note : this rule was highlighted in pink text.)
- After the planing phase, if a player wishes to look at one of his dials, he must inform his opponent first. Manipulating dials after the planning phase will not be tolerated.
So in the past FFG did make such a maneuver an intolerable offense. However of the reiterations of the FAQ this passage and possibly a lot of similar rulings were omitted . So now the intolerable offence is no longer on official record as being intolerable. Now clearly if this was still in both the past and held rulings would not have stand. Maybe OP will go into stricter and more specific rulings with the next Tournament FAQ.
