What do you hope to learn from the clan articles?

By TechnoGolem, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

They announced that they will be doing an article for each clan leading up to the release. What info do you want from them?

At the very least, I would like to see the champion or stronghold for every clan.

Crab: This clan is known for being defensive so it would be a good time to go into more depth with holdings and show a few of them off. I also want to see what their courtiers will bring to the game.

Crane: I'm hoping they will go into a lot of detail about the dueling and show that Crane stands a good chance of wining them without having to sacrifice honor.

Dragon: It's a safe bet this clan will have more monks than any other, which we've seen a little of already. I'm curious if their courtiers and samurai will play similar or differently than what we've seen of the monks.

Lion: This would be a good clan to go into more detail about honor if Crane focuses on talking about dueling. Other than that I'd like to see that they have a different direction for the clan. For being the right hand, they've always felt nearly pointless in the fiction. About all they ever do is fight the Crane or join in with the other clans to fight another threat. It would be nice to see them focus on fighting the shadowlands beyond the wall. Having them fight the Crane is a bit boring since they outclass them militarily.

Phoenix: It's a safe bet this one will mostly be about shugenja but it would be nice to see how the Shiba fit into their playstyle. Will we be able to redirect actions toward them?

Scorpion: Should be interesting to see what kind of tricks they have. Looking forward to seeing how dangerous they can be with dishonor.

Unicorn: Calvary could be devastating in the old game. Now it is just a keyword but it looks like it will be on associated with moving characters around the field. Makes me curious if they will do anything else with it.

Well, they said that the next one was story confirmed and also on Crane.

Is there enough time to do 1 clan for 2 weeks? 1st week is story 2nd is previews and strats?

There wouldn't be enough time to give each clan 2 weeks before Gen Con but they could do it depending on the official release date.

I think they said during the live stream last week that clan previews will be done every other week, which if my count is correct means the last clan will be previewed on August 9th, and if they gave two weeks to each clan the previews would finish right on August 16th, the day before Gen Con starts. They've said they are done with general rules overview stuff, so two weeks per clan seems possible to me, but they could just spend the off weeks doing fiction.

I hope they make other articles in the off week- They could cover dueling and other mechanics... in fact, anything to get a weekly fix of L5R!

Yeah, I'll take weak sauce articles as long as I get some kind of weekly stimulation. I need that fix.

I don't need to see everything but I'd like to see some of the cards, including the Stronghold, Clan Champion, and a few of the supporting personalities or conflict cards.

Story stuff too.

I want proof that they've got more on deck for the Phoenix than, "A Wizard Did It." I'd like some reassurance that they're not going to narratively cripple my favorite great clan with that sort of one-note garbage. Playstyle-wise, I want some assurances that Phoenix won't be gutted if their ring/conflict switcheroo gimmick is in some way hamstrung, and that they'll be fun to play. And in both story and gameplay, I want to see an understanding that pacifism is fine, but passivity is a friggin' faction killer. The Phoenix need to do things.

From my experience with FFG game launches each faction or clan comes out of the core set with with 1 developed theme and one sub theme that will be developed over time. What makes them unique as a clan/faction.

This theme often defines how they clan/faction plays the game. Ex: The Night's Watch got the Wall in the core set of AGoT. 2 years later, their core theme is all about protecting the Wall. Targaryen, on the other hand, were all about reducing the enemy characters' strength to 0, thus killing them.

I would love to learn this "core concept" for each of the clans. If they want to mention the sub theme, that's nice too, but those are mostly underdeveloped and more flavor for the core set.

If there's not going to be a "Cliff's Notes" history of Rokugan, then some details of the founding of each clan; Some of the notable personalities from the past and some detail of how the clan got to the position it's in at the time of core set.

As for cards: A large spoiler of cards that fit the clan's theme, an explanation of that theme and how it was chosen. A look at what other themes might be developed for that clan.

Also a family by family breakdown with how each family fits the theme, who are the notable personalities that we will be seeing as cards or in the fictions.

For example, Lion: besides the three personalities already named who else is important to the clan? Who is the family daimyos for the Akodo, Matsu, Ikoma and Kitsu?

Will there be beastmasters, omoidaisu, Sodan Senzo or other specialists (even if same don't appear in the core set)?

Will Ujimitsu wear Nikes for when he dunks on every other clan champion?

All I'm hoping is that Ujimitsu won't be unique.

That about sums up what I hope to see too. I'd like to get a feel for what the clan will do and see the cards that support that.

By the way Joe, nice to see you here. Your content was very helpful to me while I was learning Thrones. I hope you'll pick up L5R and give it a go.

For me, setting and characters are the crux of whether I love or forget a story. L5R has already got me sold on the setting, so I want the story articles to make me fall in love with the characters and, over time, I want to see the story articles be used to develop said characters in meaningful ways.

Also, I want to see the Dragon clan kicking butt. Obviously.

I want a weekly fix. Be it some article about lore, some cards spoiled, Ask Me Almost Anything, minor contests to involve the community (around the world, not just good old USA, and lawyers know what I mean),... L5R release worldwise is still very far away and anything to keep hype steady would be most welcome.

From a families point of view, obviously Unicorn ones, I would love some info like:

Iuchi: Meishodo or Name Magic. Mentioned in articles so I guess item approach instead of just regular use of spells like the rest of Great Clans. Maybe meishodo users, not regular Iuchi shugenja, are unable to use regular kami magic?

Moto: Keep most mongolian "pure" stuff to these? Please? I am eager to know about if there is still Dark Moto, if these are still "Crab on a horse"*, or if they will reflect the most gaijin and dishonorable aspects of the gaijin influences of the Unicorn Clan (the spoiled Moto would seem a good representation). Too soon for Deathpriests?

Shinjo: I always loved the Ki-Rin's compassion and explorer spirit. Movement tricks would seem the realm of this family, with Iuchi support, which seems the main Unicorn core theme. But I hope for some magistrate and tactician love too. Eventually. As the Shinjo will eventually run out of movement tricks to print on them.:P

Ide: Whole economic aspect is out unless it comes in the form of fate manipulation, even if it is only related to items. It would be nice to get some insight about this. Being diplomats with huge experience dealing with different cultures, and surviving them, I hope for some different approach on dealing with other clans. Just a bit like meishodo.

Utaku: "Lioness on a Warhorse"if you like, they would seem the honorable approach to Unicorn military might (who needs Moto, anyway?). But while I wait for FFG to give me Shiotome military-honor deck, I am curious about the movement tricks that the male Utaku can provide to the Clan (like Stable Masters). Also wonder about regular infantry bushi. Out of the Core might not be the best thing to throw in, but as some other clans will be getting cavalry, it would be interesting to see some useful Unicorn infantry.

Horiuchi: FFG, Katrina,... if I had spare money, I would pay thousands to have little gentle Shoan back (and not appear just to throw her into Shadowlands or something <_<). Ancestral Typos of L5R FTW!!!^_^

In general, I hope for different clans being able to work differently even when sharing traits. And to be consistent about it, barring story reasons/prices.

So much this :).

Also I'm hoping the Crab one gives us a better look at how holdings work and some Crab mechanics that interact with them, since I think it's an interesting concept.

For story points, I want to see who's around now, who is familiar, who is a new face and their characterizations. And their take on the Dragon champion this time around.

L5R was where I began competitive gaming back in Samurai, so I have every intention to play this game :D. I'm not sure if I'll produce content for it yet (I haven't done all that much for AGoT recently either, due to time constraints), but we'll see how it goes :).

While I am thankful that we've seen 4 Dragon non-uniques already (more than any other clan at this time, I think), I am surprised to see no Courtiers yet, let alone any Kitsuki.

I want to know if that family still exists, or if the Dragon only have three families in this FFG reboot. The loss of the Tamori, while disappointing, is lore-related consequence of the FFG direction, but the lack of revealed Kitsuki is alarming.

On the subject of the Tamori: are we the only Clan of the Founding Kami that will actually have a family never exist because of the reboot?

I would like to know about the playstyles that ever box is going to offer, so I would like to see the Stongholds and key cards that support the theme of the clan. Maybe also would already like to ge a glimpse of what is to come in the futute regarding the playstyles for that clan.

And on the fluff side I would like to know a little of the history of the clan in this new Rokugan, since FFG made it clear they feel not bound by any canon, so I would like to know how the past thousand years have been. Is the feud between the Kakita and the Matsu a thing? Does the old alliance between the Dragon and the Scoropin exist in any way, shape, or form? And plenty of more such things.

No. We are the only Clan that will have TWO families never exist (unless the story repeats itself), the Tamori (who should never have been created, as the Agasha daimyo remained in the Clan, so the traitors should have been the Gennai family.) and the Hitomi.

A brief history of how each clan got to where they are, what their current plans are, some sample cards, and...

Crane - How dueling works
Crab - How holdings will influence the game.
Unicorn - A heavier look on Calvary a moving characters in and out of battle/advanced conflict strategies.
Phoenix - A deeper look at Shugenja and what other types of magic we can expect in our games.
Lion - How they will use honor to buff their armies as well as how realistic it is to achieve honor victories? Cards to support this goal?
Scorpion - On the flip side, how easy will a dishonor victory be? Will all clans have a chance for dishonor victories? Cards to support this goal?
Dragon - A deeper look at their ring manipulation strategy. Is it limited to just the two previewed cards?

Dragon could also be an indepth look on attachments.

Speaking of attachments, have there been unit attachments?

If possible, can you please expand on this thought? My memory is too vague concerning much of Dragon Clan, and I certainly would love to read the previous background concerning an alliance between Dragon and Scorpion.

It was because the mother of Togashi Hoshi was a Scorpion, which gave Togashi the 12th black scroll, but revealed his true nature to her clan. And that sparked an ongoing assisting throughout the centuries without being a formal alliance, even to that Shoju met Togashi Yokuni before the Scorpion Coup. And the player base of both clans seemed to enjoy it, while AEG tried hard to make stories that broke that connection between them. Good times!

I agree that the Tamori should not exist. Because he only got to name a family after kidnapping the children of another clan on behalf of an attempted Usurper. I was fine with the Agasha remaining a split family, like the Yasuki were.

Also, I suspect that other Clans will lack families: Toritaka isn't part of Crab now, Yasuki might not be Crane at any point, Phoenix won't get the Agasha, Unicorn may not have Horiuchi.
