So in the FaceBook live stream they mentioned that the Gen Con tournament would be a story line/altering tournament based on the winner. Just wondering if it is the tournament that includes the core box (being played on thursday) or the other on friday? Thanks in advance
Gen Con Events question
My guess is the Friday event since there will be a Top 16 the next day.

We are on the First Edition of Legend of the Five Rings LCG.
Unlike aGoT, which is on its 2nd Ed. for the LCG.
Though to be fair, AGoT was originally a CCG, same as L5R, with virtually no changes to the core system.
Yea, I'm not sure which event to prioritize here.
The Thursday event, based on price, looks like it guarantees a core set. The Friday event, again, based on price, does not appear that way.
So what happens if you snag a seat for the Friday tournament, but you somehow don't get a core set before then?

But that was also owned by FFG. All other versions of L5R were other companies so this, technically, is 1.0 for FFG
as for the tournament, with AGoT your entry fee included a copy of the core box given to you at the sign in of the tournament. You were not required to wait in line and hope to get a copy at the booth first. Signing up for the tournament would be one way to ensure you get a Gen Con copy.

I'm guessing those might be for sale before the tournament, but I could still see that happening.
The Gen Con Event listing for the Tournament does say this:
QuoteMaterials Provided:No, materials are not provided for this game. You must bring your own.
I'm sure someone getting into the Tournament without having a Core set is going to happen.
thursday DOES provide you with 1 core set automatically which you can only play 1 core in thursday and fridays tournament anyway so you aren't at a disadvantage. Just having to pick between auto getting a set or hoping you get one and going for story does make it difficult.
Thursday gets you a core set. It says this in the event description. Otherwise have to wait in line and buy a copy.

This seems really sloppy if it's somehow possible. I'm hoping they will set aside copies for purchase for those in the Friday tournament.
Another question I would pose is whether we would need to be familiar with playing L5R to enter the Thursday tournament. I'm running a campaign in the RPG, but I never played the CCG. Now that it's an LCG, I wanted to give it a try.

be careful: if you're not at the front of the line on thursday (say you're in the Netrunner, Arkham Horror, Xwing, or Armada events that same day) FFG will sell out and you will be SOL.
Not if you purchase a ticket for the Thursday tournament (the cost is included into the ticket) they hand you the copy when you register that you are attending the tournament. They did this for Game of Thrones when it first released for their core set tourney. Now for the netrunner one quite a few years back yes that was quite a fright, they had a tournament friday or saturday and they sold out two days straight i was insanely lucky to get it the day of the tournament... but that was also before they started limiting how many a person could buy. I recall seeing a guy buy 8 netrunner core sets on the first day...
Edited by cerealkiller1952 years ago, I went to the FFG booth to get my reserved Core Set, along with 2 others and the long-awaited Conquest deluxe. I didn't hear anything about the reserved Core Set being given at the event.
In any case, I intend to participate only in the Thursday tournament, because I want to participate in the AGoT melee on Friday.

Just to be clear here: this program of events is WAY better than anything a lot of us hoped for. The logistics and restrictions of running events at GenCon mean that FFG have really pulled out all the stops to get this many events, and especially to get so many seats for the Inaugural event - 350 seats is the largest ever release event for an LCG by a considerable margin, and may end up being the one of the largest LCG events ever run period. When you add to that the fact there are L5R events on all four days, including tournaments catering for both competitive and casual players, this really is something we should be applauding, not criticizing.
As for the questions about the constructed tournaments...yes, you need to get your own copy of a core set to take part, and there's always the chance you won't be able to do that - conventional wisdom would suggest the core sets will sell out very quickly each day. Still, you don't manage to get one, you still have options: you could, for example, ask someone who took part in the Thursday event and isn't playing (potentially 200 players!) if you could use theirs. You could sell/give your ticket to someone who has a core set but didn't get in to the constructed event. You can also return your ticket for system credit with GenCon itself. There are enough options there that no-one is going to be out of pocket over this.
To repeat: great job, FFG. Can't wait.
Had my daughter not been born this year, I would have been there. Now, I have no regret, she's a marvel and I'm quite happy she's here, but she's the only reason why I could miss this year's GenCon.
Launch of L5R AND 50years of GenCon, I can hardly see how 4 days will be enough ![]()
I'll wait for the complete list of cards to be revealed but once this is out, there'll be a lot of deck-building and playing happening.

Can't disagree with that. ![]()

Unlikely it sells out that fast. And if it does they just bring in more copies like they did for Netrunner in 2012. Or borrow cards from someone else. I will happily loan mine out since I won't be using anywhere near the entire core set.
Something else to bear in mind...we've already seen with the amount of events and the spaces available that FFG are taking the launch very seriously, and have learned from mistakes in the past. It certainly seems like it would be possible that carries over to the amount of stock they have available, and that more product will be on hand than at previous launches.
I think I'll just start saving up to do a trip to Gencon next year.

They've actually said that this will be their biggest LCG launch ever.
This is our eighth in a row. I highly recommend it ![]()
What time does GenCon start on Thursday? I saw on thier website that the building opens at 1000, but they say that does not mean the venue opens at that time.
Just now, Toqtamish said:They've actually said that this will be their biggest LCG launch ever.
Sure, but the magnitude is still a pleasant surprise - it's one thing to be a little bigger than previously, and another to smash their previous records out of sight like it appears this year will!
Shhhh we should start hyping it after May 28th. Get our spots, THEN go hardcore promoting.
