How do you keep the play mat from being too messy?
Don't put anything on it???????????????
Dials on the ship cards.
War is messy!!
Do you live in Austin or just drink Austin Vodka?
My casual group also does the blue target lock on base thing. When using ships with 1 shield (scyk, hwk, kirahx) i also like to put the shield token itself in the 'back' slot of the base.
Also- dials on pilot cards
I never put dials on the mat, and I usually store the tokens on the ship's base
I number my ships and use number target-lock tokens. the TL corresponds with the number the ship has, that way I only need the RED TL.. i also use a "dashboard" that has the same number slot.. also holds my dial. sold on etsey BTW..
I just make a mess ?
I never do the TL thing since it gets in the way of seeing if I have Arc, plus now I got acrylics. I keep the entire board clean by using these for my cards http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/228689?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&scid=scplpUGD010496&sc_intid=UGD010496&gclid=CjwKEAjw3drIBRCOwfC-_qqyjQ8SJADvoWQpTykxHT-9HVNWsmE89mB4JNqm0xiQMsAI2agBX09bzBoCZ-bw_wcB
And then I use this for my movement templates

For my tokens I just got a little $3-5 plastic box that has compartments that are the perfect size for the tokens. I also chose to get acrylic tokens that no one else in the area has so my stuff doesn't get mixed up with theirs.
Lastly, I have had issues with people cheating with their dials, so I don't like when people put their dials on the ship cards. How I make sure my dials are clearly different are to use the dial covers and cut out little lego figures of that pilot and use that as the ID token.

Me too! By the end of the game, it'spretty ridiculous actually.
Everything needed to play fits in the bottom half of the core set box. (once you take out the plastic.) Creates an "organized" mess when your done.
Organizing brainpower is wasted brainpower. There is no mess. There are only the ships.
Dials on the pilot cards, blue target lock tokens in the slot on the bases. That helps a lot.
I have no idea where I got that vodka. And I can't remember if I liked it.

Sounds like you might have liked it a bit TOO much
"crafted storage" makes a cool storage box that can be made skinny enough to fit on the table BETWEEN or at the sides of the mats if the standard 4x8 table tops are being used.. I find mine really handy, used to use a small Battlefoam case, problem was i had to put it on the floor or some place and then line up all my tokens etc.. now they have a nifty tray to store them in during game play..
