What happens when you have a card, like Determination, that can give you a modified/valued specials die? Since values also don't apply to a specials resolution it seems to me that they shouldn't affect it(since a 3(Special) doesn't matter either, even if it seems to currently. Thoughts?
Determination ~ Modified Specials?
The rules reference flat out says that you can't resolve a modified dice by itself. I think this is similar to C-3PO, who is covered in the rules reference:
C-3PO (30)
C-3PO does not allow you to resolve the die without paying its resource cost, nor does he allow you to ignore modifiers.
C-3PO can turn other dice into specials, at which point the value of the dice does change to 0.
Hope that helps!

Huh, so changing a dice into a special seems super weird since contrary to the card effect it doesn't actually retain it's value then since it would become 0(assuming a similar ruling like C-3PO). That said, super interesting and thanks!
Edited by AtomiskValue and Modifier are separate components of the die facing. Altering one (or ignoring it) doesn't change the other.
