Artifact Bearer and Shield of Margath.

A 3x3 block of Spearmen take Artifact Bearer and Shield of Margath. Which Defense value gets used to determine how much damage is inflicted? Do you use the defense value of 3 from the the Artifact Bearer or the 1 from the generic Spearmen in the unit. I'm leaning towards the defense value that the unit has instead of the value of any specific figure upgrade in that unit but I'm not sure.

Artifact Bearer
Champion figure upgrade.
3 defense, 2 wounds.
Daqan, Infantry
4 points.

Add [ARTIFACT] to this unit's available upgrades.

"When this figure is removed, discard 1 [ARTIFACT] upgrade that is equipped to this unit."

I think we go back to 88.4: "If an upgrade effect uses the term “you,” it refers to the unit to which that upgrade is equipped."

"Your defense" will refer to the unit, rather than any figure upgrades in the unit.

That was what I was thinking but it seems like excluding figure upgrades that are part of a unit from "you" would mean that something like shield wall wouldn't increase the defense of figure upgrades (which may be the intention).

Perhaps. But to me, nothing about Shield Wall seems like it very well could be just for units. It would certainly help figure upgrades if Shield Wall helped them, but it doesn't look to me like Shield Wall interacts with figure upgrades. Maybe a future upgrade will buff figure upgrade defenses.

the rules for figure upgrades (don't have the number) says that they gain bonuses to defense granted to the unit.
