From the Reddit AMA we know that minor clans do exist and that they are planning to involve them.

Guys guys guys guys (in a non-gendered kind of way). You get 10 influence to spend on one other clan for your Conflict deck. Perhaps this is how Mantis and other minor clans will get into your deck.

I would think it very possible for minor clan cards to be introduced as unaligned, like how the Miya mystic is an imperial but unaligned.

But unless LCGs involve stuff like MRPs ("most recent printings"), they'll have to decide if Mantis/Yoritomo's Alliance will be a thing from the beginning (if they want everyone to have borders and such.) So far, none of the faction alignments appear to come from traits, only card borders.

This would be a wise move imo, on the part of FFG as it would allow them to introduce many different previously known as "minor clans" without needing to compromise space from further releases.

My gut feeling tells me that isn't the direction that the game is slated to go in.

Well said twinstarbmc. Kudos!

That could be an interesting way to introduce factions that they don't want to fully support right now, but might want to at a later date. Interesting idea.

This is a solid idea as it gets a clan into the game that people really like without diluting the card pool with an eighth faction.

Plus, one could imagine it would be a lot of fun to drop Yoritomo from one's hand mid-conflict. :P

Either FFG has already decided to add Mantis or they have not. I vote for the former.

If they decided for not adding them as Playable Faction, you will see Mantis an neutral characters for Dinasty and Conflict decks. Much like anny other neutral character.

If they decided for adding them as Playable Faction at some point, their choices about template are:

  • neutral with Mantis Clan written that will later count as having Mantis border (no need for reprints altough it would look weird... much like old ccg).
  • pre-Playable Faction and post-Playable Faction Mantis will keep neutral border. Unless some Great Clan stuff happens, they are not part of the Cool Kids Club.
  • specific Mantis border from the very beginning. Avoids reprints and visual clashing of pre-Playable Faction and post-Playable Faction Mantis.

I would like to add that so far we have only seen neutrals in the form of Otomo and ronin, which are obviously neutrals in the great scheme of things. For all we know, minor clans may get their own clan template treatment (which would be awesome) without implying any potential playability as their own faction and/or them not being considered neutral in terms of deck building.

With how much love, there is for both spider & mantis, I doubt, they will be left out permanently.

There is just too much demand and FFG loves taking our money. It seems like they are listening....

It seems rational, that some of thee ol' story will be borrowed upon at times. Since both Spider & Mantis arrived later... certain events may have to be made in order to dramatically bring those clans to life. It's just a matter of time. Plus, 9 clans/factions is a lot for a core set... Heck 7 clans, is a mouthful.

I look forward to keeping up with all this new fiction!

I really really like the idea of Dragon Spider Monks... that leave Dragon, to embrace the shadowlands and come back as Spider.

I wouldn't mind, if Mantis, would just replace Crane clan altogether...

How dare you ?! (°o°)

Outrage, outrage :P.

A complaint I've heard is that the Mantis merchant theme left the Crane without a clear role. This time around they seem to be focusing a lot more on the art and politics side of the Crane and not on the 'we have money' side. After all you can't leave developing culture to a bunch of pirates.
