The Stuff of Legends

By Alzer, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

To stop dragging another thread so recklessly off its rails, this is a thread to discuss all of our favorite legends material, from Heir to the Empire to Shadows of the Empire.

I've been on a major SW reading spree since Awakens, but I think my favorite Legends books are actually Wraith Squadron, Iron Fist, and Solo Command from the X-Wing series.

As a side note, I find it slightly amusing that I am leading both threads of written works, but I am a librarian so...

While I enjoyed the Thrawn Trilogy, I found it to be a rather slow read.

My favorite Legends book, of the few I've read so far is Death Star.

I've been contemplating doing an animated video project that combines elements of Death Star, certain elements of the Star Wars Radio Play from 1980, and Rogue One.

Yeah I think all the bits without Thrawn are a bit slow. . . after the first couple of times reading the series I skipped those parts, 'cause the attraction is seeing Thrawn work his magic, not watching the other characters try to figure out what you already know, having just read Thrawn do whatever it was.

I think my favorite series of Legends was the Republic Commando books.

I don't know what Star Wars Radio Play is, but an animated series sounds fun.

I would put the Thrawn Trilogy on top, but I couldn't stand anything to do with C'baoth. I thought he was a terrible addition to the SW universe and the fleet mind-control stuff was total nonsense.

Battle Meditation was also featured prominently in the First Knights of the Old Republic game... which is also very popular. YMMV on whether it's a good addition to the Franchise, but it was attached to some of the best Legends stories.

Yeah I remember, and that was really good. I guess mostly it was just the fact that they basically had Tim the Enchanter locked away on a mountain hallucinating.

Let's just clear that EU is superior to Disneyverse in every way :P

To be a bit more serious, by far the best is the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn.

The EU universe haddn't interested me in a long while, especially when I was reading accounts of GALACTIC POLITICS and the casualties suffered from the Yuuzan vong war. Things didn't become interesting for me until I caught wind of the Legacies universe... that I miss from the old canon.

Otherwise I'm happy for the re-set. It means we get Thrawn back and chewbacca doesn't have to die by having a moon fall on him.

Yes, because the dude who has a laser canon for a face in Mandalorian Armor is something we wanted to keep :P

I'll have to read more of the EU stuff, but a lot of it is really...out there.

Also getting the Galactic Civil War period filled in more is super exciting, nobody TOUCHED that in the Lucas days.

If you mean pre-Endor, then there was Death Star and Tales of the Empire. But yep, it's nice to have more.

There are 36 books which take part between ANH and RotJ. And 28 more between RotS and ANH. They were all released before the Disney takeover.

Huh, I somehow just totally missed all of those then.

I also really enjoyed the Republic Commando novels. I was working my way through the old canon chronologically (starting in the old republic) and still havn't gotten through the OT era, mainly because I ran out of free time to read as much as I used to. I did make an exception to my reading order to read the Thrawn trilogy though, it is definitely a strong series probably my second favorite.

Underrated. lol

I didn't like C'Baoth that much in the original Thrawn trilogy for exactly this reason, he reminded me of "Tim the Enchanter". However, his role in the prequel novel outbound flight fleshed out the character, and given his interactions with Thrawn in the original T trilogy, it was interesting to watch his fall to the darkside.

Though if I had to have a favorite EU set, it would have to be either the Tales of the Jedi comics which detailed the rise of the ancient Sith empire, Ulic Qel Droma, Naga Sadow, Exar Kun, Nomi Sunrider, and various other Pre-Revan era Sith lore, or, of course, the Darth Bane trilogy, which really helped get inside the head of a Sith lord. You could see where a person could become cackling and evil like palpatine yet still see themselves as not evil.
