Armada Player Rankings!

By shmitty, in Star Wars: Armada

In collecting all of the fleet data from Regionals I kept thinking I should be tracking the names that have repeatedly shown up in the tournament results. So, I am going to do just that!

Introducing the Armada Player Rankings! LINK

Here's how it works:

Rules
1. Only one tournament per month counts towards a players ranking
2. Only the highest Tier tournament played in each month will be counted
3. If 2 tournaments of equal Tier are played, only the highest score will count
4. Scores count towards ranking for 12 months
5. Only publicly reported scores will count, where the entire order of finish is available

Here's how points are scored:

Winner Finals Top 4 Top 8 Top 16 Top 32 Top 64 Field
Tier 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 100
Grand Slam Worlds, North American, European, Vassal World Cup 1 2000 1200 720 360 180 90 45 25
National Championships 2 1000 600 360 180 90 45 25
Regionals, Adepticon 3 500 300 180 90 45 20
Store Championships 4 250 150 90 45 12
Seasonal Kits 5 125 75 45 5

This is a modification of the system used in tennis for the ATP rankings. I felt like it adapted to Armada pretty well.

How do you get a tournament to count towards the rankings? Easy! Just tag me in a post with the picture or typed out results and someone will get them put in.

Speaking of data entry, this is going to be work to keep up. If you are interested in help with the data entry on this, please let me know via PM.

I already have the results in from Worlds thanks to some help from @BiggsIRL . If you happen to know the faction someone played and I don't have it listed, please let me know.

This is going to be one big project for you I hope you know!

I wish I had a picture of the Sunday Adepticon results, but I'm afraid I don't. I do have the Friday results. This was from back in March.

I'll have to start getting pictures of final standings from here on out to add to the project.

It will definitely be a big project, which is why I am hoping to recruit some help along the way.

But, I also forgot to mention that I am not going to add in past tournaments. The rankings start in May 2017 and will go forward from here!

I figure Store Championships season will give lots of people a chance to score some points.

You will never have the full data untill FFG/Asmodee decide to make a database for all. And once they do this, they could do their own ranking (something every big gaming company is doing when doing competion play...).
Or where are you getting all the data from all Nationals, Regionals, Store Champs around the world?

I dont like the idea of only one tournament per month over 12 month. This would never reflect the real player skill, only how often they play.
Second part is the size of the tournament. You can have Store champs with 40 player and regional champs with only 4 player attending. in this case the Store Champ "should" have a higher value than the regional champ. Even when the regional is a higher tier.
You could keep the tier, but add a multiplier for the number of players, combined with a expectance of players. Like: expect 80 for WM = factor 1.00. If there are 100 it is a factor of 1.25. If there are only 60 it is a factor of 0.75.

use a system where only the top 5 games count for the score. And there is a automatic decay for the points over time. Recent tournaments are 100%, and older ones lose the rating untill they are at 0%.
This system is really good. Because it does not matter if the tournamet was worlds or store. They are equal, and regulated over the size (the number of players).

Question: How does the computation works exactly?

Answer: Every wednesday morning (at 5:03 o'clock) the recomputation of the NTRs is started. The following algorithmic is used:

1. Depending on the tournament size the NTR-points for each acquired tournament are computed (tournament points).
2. Depending on the age of the tournament the influence of the tournament is computed. Each 150 days a tournament looses 25% of its value.
3. Every player now gets his/her points through the following formula for each tournament: PlayersPoints = (TournamentPoints / (Number of Participants - 1)) * (Number of Participants - Placement of Player) * TimeFactor
4. For a good placement you'll get a bonus to your points.
5. For each player his/her 5 highest scores (as in 3+4) are taken, sorted descending and valued at a rate of 24%/22%/20%/18%/16% (total 100%). The sum of the 5 valued scores is the number of NTR-points for the player.

And even the T³ data are not representative, because way to many games are not hosted over it. But it is the best we have to check for tournaments in germany. Because there is nearly no information from the distributor.

So, unless FFG/Asmodee will do something like this on their own, with all data of all tournamets, it will be a lot of work to collect all these informations. If you even get them :P . But it is great that someone is trying it :) .

Edit: to bad you didn't do this last year.

I have been getting order of finish data along with fleet lists from Regional tournaments for the past year. In the last Regional season I had data from 35 tournaments, which is a fairly high percentage of the total. It would be great if FFG collected the data themselves, but the community has been really good about helping to collect it.

What would you suggest instead of one per month counting? I didn't want this to be about who played the most if a player was able to hit multiple tournaments in a month.

Fortunately, I have data on the size of the various tournaments. There are some smaller regionals (although none as low as 4 players) and larger store championships. I considered a size multiplier, but wanted to keep it simple at first and see how it played out. One thought I had was to offer a score multiplier to any of the lower tier tournaments that had enough attendance to reach 4 rounds. Bumping those tournaments up a tier is one option.

I've enjoyed tracking the fleet data and this is just another way for me to expand that work. Hopefully people think it is fun.

And I really do appreciate the feedback.
