Weapon Master or Lance Corporal?

By FatherTurin, in Runewars Tactics

With the infantry upgrade expansion coming soon, I was just wondering what other people thought of these upgrades and which one they think they will use more (for spearmen, I think artifact bearer and heart seeker is the no brainer for crossbowmen).

Personally, I am torn. Adding a red die to spearmen is certainly awesome, but so is the option of having the defense mod count as white (or the hit for that matter, being able to mod a low initiative attack). What are you all planning on doing?

Getting a defense modifier while attacking is probably going to be the most popular use for the Lance Corporal but he does allow a few other cool tricks that may allow you to catch your opponent off guard. The Lance Corporal also lets you charge on a shift, attack with a hit modifier on 3, or delay a charge until 8 (and it's a long one). If you take trumpets as well then you are able to use the turn or wheel template with your shift.

I think it's best to go with the weapons master for now. If you gain Inspiration tokens, you'll probably need to spend them on removing blight instead of refreshing Lance Corporal. When we get more Inspiration acceleration, I think Lance Corporal is really going to shine.

The thing about the Weapons Master to me is that it's a lot of points to get the offensive output that the Oathsworn Cav come with. Now, obviously they're different units and a comparison is not so easy, but if pure offensive punch is your goal, I'm not sure the Spearmen are the right choice. Now, it does combo nicely with the extra threat from the Front Line Rune Golem, but now you're in for a minimum of 74 points. I think a 3x2 with Lance Corporal is going to be more versatile.

Also the Lance Corporal is quite good on the Heavy Crossbowmen, since he allows them to dial a hit on their ranged attack (excellent for a 3 threat ranged unit)

Red die! Red die! Red die! My style is aggressive more offense please!

I played around a bit with using the turn and wheel templates to shift with a 3x3 block. It allows some interesting repositioning options for what is normally an unwieldy unit.

The other nice thing about the Lance Corporal + Trumpets combo that I noticed is that it allows you to "Nope" out of your selected modifier. If you set a turn or a wheel modifier with your shift you can decide to use the straight template at the time of activation by just not using Lance Corporal.

Even without Trumpets, Lance Corporal will allow you to decide to charge or not on the initiative 8 4 March once you know for certain whether or not it will collide with an enemy. Lance Corporal + Aggressive Cornicen does allow you to do the same but does kick it up a notch. That combo allows you to charge (or not) and to add a hit modifer if you do collide.

For a damage dealing tar pit Weapon Master, he adds a red die which 1)makes blight SLIGHTLY less effective against the block of spears, 2) it is a potential increase of 10 damage in a 3x3 with FRG 3) does not need to be exhausted, if you want the defense buff take shield wall to protect against a hit...I know it is only one attack but still. 4) I don't have a 4 it just seemed like a better idea to add one more topic and end on an even number.

It is Consistency vs Potential damage at an Initiative 3 attack. Plus lance corporal can do defense modifiers while attacking too.

In having fun with Agressive Cornicen and Lance Corp. Setting up the late round move 4 charge with a hit modifier is brutal.

Both are preciously amazing.

Giving them a third die can exponentially increase damage, especially if you got a Golem in there. In theory, a 3x3 spearmen with Weapons Master and a Golem can do 30 damage in a single attack (2red1blue +1hit modifier = 6 hits, 3wide base + Brutal2 = Threat5).

Odds of that happening? Laughably low, though i did manage a 20damage hit w/o the weapons master, which is the max that same setup can do without the third die. Greatly increase odds of the 20 damage though and thats still a ton of damage.

Lance Corp can let them do things in really weird orders. I played 2 games with it, once i charged using the 8init orange 4speed move by making the charge white, completely threw my opponent off as he expected a quick charge due to spearmen being able to do that at the given range so he missed his attack. I used it several times to get the hit modifier on a quick attack too, letting me take out the rest of a rank before he got to use its reroll.

Issue is the exhausting, and i dont like using inspiration on cards because BLIGHT SUCKS. However thats where a 2x1 spearmen unit with the Rallying Cornicen comes into play :D

A third die is also a soft counter to blight. It might be the difference between rolling 1 die and no dice.

Once more factions drop and blight is less prevalent, manipulating initiative seems the more potent tool

The lance corporal and also the weapon master are so much better choices than the command upgrade from undead.

Adding a red die or the possibility to make a range 4 charge is great and you can use it in many situations.

The saboteur or the assassin are cool shenanigans but are very situational.

Last Wednesday I have tested the lance corporal together with a block of 3*3 spearmen with golem, they rock the house as they use the ini8 orange charge4 to run into a unit of 2*2 lancer.
