L5R Art

I always loved this art.

Bring her back and do something with her this time! Or at least her art.

To each their own, but I'm not a fan of this sort of pseudo-'manga' art in the game. Also, FFG seems to be going away from 'half the people on Rokugan are falling out of their kimono' thing.

That said, this piece has some nice, vibrant colors. Also, Fusako was an interesting character (what little of her there was), and her daughter could have been as well, if she'd gotten any story time.

One of the times the Dragon clan did have an actual dragon (well, a 'Ryu;, anyway) :

A Dragon bushi, with excellent art that shows even many Dragon warriors have a philosophical / mystical side:

Nice art of a Dragon monk (this character was actually a monk, a shugenja, and an alchemist. the card was so-so power wise, but **** cool).
svpKKHQ.jpg

A Dragon monk of the 'kikage-zumi'. They took the Hitomi name, and were often more direct and even brutal than the Togashi monks:
it0wHvc.jpg

A monk of the Hoshi family. They were named after Togashi Hoshi, the son of the kami Togashi. Hoshi was a half-dragon (as in a creature, not just clan) that left the clan for a while when his father's successor as Champion, Hitomi, started having 'disloyal' members of the clan killed (she was being driven crazy by...well, it's long story. She did get better, though). Hoshi monks were often the most 'honorable' of the monk orders, and some of their character cards in the game allowed you to gain honor for doing things with Rings, duels, etc.

Bonus: Togashi Nyima, punching a Crane in the head.

Holy crap. Hida was hardcore.

All Hida are hardcore. Besides looking like a ripped version of the shredder Hida Kisada fought Fu Leng hand to hand and survived having a sword driven through his gut it eventually killed him two and a half years later. He was then so epic that he fought his way back to life, fought in more wars and was eventually killed in his old age by an army of scorpion clan ninja. He ended up killing 24 of them with his bare hands before being knocked out. There is some epic art of him doing this.

200?cb=20090725083248

His son Sukune got sacrificed to Fu Leng which doomed his soul to Jigoku(hell) but he was such a pure spirit he was just able to leave.

His other son Yakumo not only got to have two powerful magic hands (one a evil claw the other a jade fist) and was chosen as the crab clan thunder to fight and kill Fu Leng but eventually he became the sun.

The Hida family is the single largest group of hard core people in rokugan.

You forgot O-Ushi, by far my favorite Crab.

(Yeah, the whole 'Look at mah boobehs!' armor is ridiculous - and probably painful for her - but otheriwise Snoddy's art nailed the character).

As for Hida Kisada: He was such a Richard-head that I really disliked it when they just decided he was a big hero...somehow. Was he a bad mofo? Yes. Was he at least arguably a fool to be so easily manipulated by Kuni Yori, and kind of a traitor for using the Shadowlands against people of Rokugan? Also yes. Having him come back via 'oh, the destroyed Obsidian's Gate has like, one more charge in it, you guys!' was the worst kind of cheesy-ness. To be fair, that storyline prize was already silly to begin with, no matter who would be brought back, and the original Spirit Wars stuff was somewhat goofy to begin with.

Yakamo wasn't exactly very honorable or decent, either, at first. However, the blood feud between he and Hitomi was one of the best L5R ever had, as she herself was far from a noble hero, being in many ways a broken person obsessed with avenging her brother. I loved the thematic perfection of them becoming the new Sun and Moon (so that people could say 'she follows him still, so that one day they will have their final duel' - though they kinda did make peace with each other, or at least respect each other before they left the mortal plane). I hated the way they handled killing off Sun-Yakamo and Moon-Hitomi. Their elevation was epic, and the culmination of years of stories. Their destruction was a paragraph or two each, if that. Insulting.

Oh, and as for looking like The Shredder, this guy was usually the one people thought of:

While to a point I can agree, at the same time I must disagree. She is wearing some proper armor, which is more than can be said about other female warriors in general gaming. Armor that I would imagine that it must not be comfortable at all for her but... she is a Crab, not a Crane. Also, from a purely "badass looking, frak real world, let's wear armor while almost naked" point of view, and ignoring the trouble that would suppose for the company to show female breasts*:

I find fair that O-Ushi that be free to choose how she looks. She certainly looks better to me than:

But in general, I am not a fan of bushi going naked to battle.

But without padding, the functionality of armor halves - it can still protect from cut/thrust, but the blunt kinetic force will transfer directly into her chest.

As you said - she is wearing proper armor (and that's great) but in completely improper way.

As do the other male Crabs I showed later. In other games, she would have gotten a yoroi bikini or something. So while all of them wear it in improper ways, they do use some reasonable one. If topless were not such a problem for females, we may have gotten a topless one like those male Crabs too. Which while more fair from the art point of view, would still suck from the point of view of someone trying to survive melee. But hey, fantasy!

To be fair (to both of you) parrying with a katana was something that very rarely happened at all, flat or blade. They just weren't made for that kind of punishment. As sharp and deadly as t he better-crafted katana were, they were rather fragile. Granted, L5R hasn't ever depicted katana realistically, anyway. At times, katana in Rokugan might as well be lightsabers. Hell, for most of their history, real-world samurai were mostly horse cavalry, anyway.

They did have a topless woman in Rokugan: Hoshi / Togashi Oki, and her soul-of. It was rather silly.

Being a monk and her role as such would work for her. Altough showing so much skin, one would have to wonder what would decent courts have to say about that. :P

While I do not ask for topless females (neither males, actually), if I were to draw a female bushi going "topless", I would rather draw here in a style like:

Matsu_Rika.jpg

But this is a game of heroics...

bbc52a57cca7558f48b7ed56463a75a2.jpg

so people having forgotten at home armor pieces, using long untied hair in battle, not using cloth under armor,.... is to be expected. -_- As long as fanservice is avoided, I am open minded.

Some more Scorpion:

That is beaus redemption is a big samurai theme that gets overlooked a lot. Heck, its the whole reason for sepuku, which Kisada did plan on doing until he was convinced he was needed to attack the imperial palace (again) , is to kill yourself so that you are forgiven for whatever you have done. Crabs are always dealing with the trouble of taint and other dark side things. Heck, that is one of the underlining themes of "Lone wolf and cub" which is one of the best samurai drama I know of. Its also taught me that a good samurai story needs a nice side of cheese. Not to mention the antivillein returning as a hero is classic anime.

Also, I always imagined the whole alliance with the shadowlands was the result of the crab clan being sick of the infighting of the other clans and the apparent weakness of the emperor finally fallowing though on the classic road trip threat of "Don't make me come back there!"

Now for some art:

This one just makes me think "FINISH HIM"

hida_kanchimi__crab_ninja__color_version

This is just fan art from a series of cross clan trained characters. A Hida trained by scorpions to be a ninja. I don't know why but I love it.

That moment when you realize attack on titan is ripping off crab clan.

Curious to see what FFG does with the Matsu Chizuki art, if anything.

Ah, good ol' L5R. Where so many forum discussions turn into card-game-players of the 21st century arguing about the correct way to fight or use weaponry of feudalistic Japan. Everybody's a kensai... heh.

Bushi should fight naked and shugenja wear heavy armor while hiding in the back.

Well, you don't have to be samurai to understand how armor works. That's like, medieval warfare 101...

This was one of my favorite pieces of art, and one of those ones that kind of became my mental picture for 'Crab Berserker'. I don't know why but it has just always stuck in my head.

Togashi Satsu was a pretty beastly character.
