Lingering Rules Questions

Specifically what I'm getting at with the third question is if you can engage in a battle and then use the spell from a character not at the battle to target a character not currently at the battle.

The way I'm reading Cloud the Mind seems to imply that while you need to control a shugenja to use it, none of your shugenja appear to actually "use" the spell; you as a player use it once you meet the "controls a shugenja" requirement. We still don't know a lot about spells, so Cloud the Mind could be unique in this way, but it could also be the new norm for spell casting. I assume we'll find out around the time of the Phoenix preview.

Good point. Every time I think I've made progress on unlearning things, new things crop up. I'd still like to know if characters in an opponents' home are generally fair game though.

From the way they were talking in the live stream I get the feeling that unless the action states otherwise characters in homes are fair game, but yeah I would like confirmation of that, too.

For Cloud the Mind, it looks to me like you could play it in the action windows before and between conflicts at any rate, so you don't even need to wait for the conflict. But I'm just guessing; I might be wrong.

The marketing previews are great, but I'd really love to get some fleshed out rules. I just like having precise definitions so that there isn't a lot of confusion when we're chatting about the cards. I've got fingers crossed, but doubt we'll see the full rulebook til someone posts a blurry picture of it from Gencon.

Given that there will be a tournament at Gen Con, I think (hope?) they will release a full rulebook online, and maybe even a text card spoiler, before the event. But this is my first FFG experience, does anyone know how they usually do this?

FFG now (as in the past two years or so) traditionally has the full rules up usually about one to two weeks before general release. For GenCon prereleases, they have had the rules up before that.

Just because something isn't likely to happen often doesn't mean that it won't or can't happen. It'd still be good to know what the rules say happen.

You are right :)

Threadsurrection!

Here is a list of things I can think of that we (or at least I) still want clarification on:

1) Who wins a tie in a duel?

2) How, exactly, does influence work? Are all in-faction cards with no printed influence free, or not allowed for splashing.

3) How do we pick provinces?

4) Can the effect (not cost) of an action target someone who it will not affect? Example, can you bow an already bowed target, or honor an already honored target?

5) What is the stat value of a character with - as their skill. Is it an auto-lose or a 0 for a duel?

6) What are "Personalities"?

I suppose 2 and 3 could just go under "How does deck building work, exactly?"

7) If your opponent attacks a province, and doesn't break it, and then attacks the same province again with their other conflict, do you get to reuse the province's ability?

8) What printed abilities default to once per turn?

9) How does restricted work? Can you not target a character with a restricted attachment if they already have 2, or can you choose to discard one of the attachments?

If I remember correctly, they stated at some point that broken provinces cannot be re-attacked.

Right, typo, thanks! Updated my question. Meant it to be "Doesn't"

Ahh! It's a Threadcromancer!

7. I would think that a province's ability can be used just like any other ability. The only limiting factor would be any text that explicitly says something like, "once per game" or "when this card is revealed".

8. Don't all printed abilities default to once per turn unless otherwise stated? This tends to be how it is in FFG games that I've seen. Have we seen any examples of abilities that wouldn't make sense this way?

In the article it said "characters". We're just seeking explicit confirmation.

I would assume once per turn for all abilities. Many people have pointed to the fact that the stronghold bows as part of its ability as a potential argument against this, but I'm assuming that there will be cards that say "Bow your stronghold to do X", similar to the abilities that do the same to your faction card in AGoT2.0. Bowing does not seem to be tied to using abilities in any way in this version, its simply a requirement for certain game effects and abilities.

It's got to be once per turn per action for all cards, or Scorpion could just City of Lies endlessly for an entirely zero-cost conflict deck.

It would be good to get confirmation. But yes, you are correct that is the implication, though each time costs an action. Additionally Crane would get approximately endless card draw with Artisan Academy. Based on their phrasing, there is an implication that it isn't every card type, and it would be nice to know if there are exceptions.

There may also be cards that bow the opponent's stronghold, to prevent use of such abilities.

6) What are "Personalities"?

1) Good question, no idea. I imagine nothing happens, no winner, no loser, just a potential payment of honor.

2) Fairly certain this will be like Netrunner, faction cards with no labelled influence can not be splashed. I am definitely going to assume this, it makes a lot of sense.

3) Still unanswered, yes, and fairly important. The icons in the bottom right do seem to indicate that you must have one of each ring labelled on your provinces, but this is still just conjecture. Note however that this is likely supported by the fact that there appears to be 10 neutral provinces from analysing the card numbers, so 2 for each ring. Not a great deal of deckbuilding freedom if that is the case, certainly.

4) I would assume so.

5) Excellent question. This one I hesitate to predict.

6) Was this term used by FFG at some point? Perhaps they simply messed up the terminology, it's an easy mistake.

Its from the box content list from a Spanish distributor. 5 Personality Cards that we know nothing about.

I know no Spanish, but could the translation also be Persona? That leads credence to the sensei or multiplayer role belief

Ah, right, now I remember. I'm certainly leaning towards multiplayer "role" cards like AGOT, but they seem to be pretty tight-lipped about multiplayer at this point.

That is certainly a possibility, but as of right now, we don't have any idea.

I like your word better. But, it was what google translate picked out for the word. Admittedly it picked out "card" for token and something else for "card" Sheet maybe?

Added these to the list.

I am 99% certain that no influence = clan only. I would be absolutely floored if its anything else. I am adding it, but only because I don't want to be a jerk :)

These are the same question, and it is already on the list. See question 4.

Added this to the list.

I also added a question I have seen other places, but not here. What happens when a deck is empty?
