Off Topic: Rogue One discovery

By TheEldarGuy, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Wasn't too sure which Forum to use, but I figured there might be more of an impact here in Imperial Assault land.

I was looking at some DK Star Wars Rogue One books, one of them was a visual guide to the movie (contained some photos of the shooting of the film as well as the bits and pieces in the film); in the book we saw the home that Jyn Erso had when she was a child, and then the book did a break down of her toys and the names she gave them.

Mr. Stormie was the storm trooper; she had some wooden hand made toys of a Star Destroyer, Light Cruiser and a Clone Wars jedi cruiser.

One of her 'toys' in her possession was a tall lanky metallic droid she called Mr. Iggy. Looked a lot like IG-88 series. Could her Dad have built these droids? Imagine having a special action/ability: 'IG-Series immunity: No IG model of Assassin droid can target you for an attack if there was another target on the board.'

Of interest or not?

Huh, that is interesting. As far as I know, IG doesn't have a current canon origin.

Plus, in Legends, IG-88 takes over the second Death Star- probably not in the way Galen would've imagined, but perhaps the creator's intent and the creation's actions didn't quite align there. :P

Interesting stuff to speculate. I doubt that we'll get much more info on Galen any time soon, but perhaps an IG-88 origin story is in the works at some point (even if its' just a short written story). I've always found him to be a fascinating character.

Regarding the IG Immunity card/ability- seems extremely situational. If anything, I'd have it refer to any droid. Seems like a cool idea, but I think it would be a long, long time before we get Galen Erso as an ally, if ever.

I feel like there were IG-86 droids as far back as the Clone Wars cartoon but I am not certain. Maybe Galen was in droid R&D in his earlier years with the Empire, transitioning Commando droid tech into Assassin droids. That would be some neat backstory.

Well, IG-88A specifically. B, C, and D were all fortunate enough to be destroyed before they had to see that lunacy get printed. :P

IG series droids were around in TCW. But so was Galen I 'spose.

Though Galen would never have developed droids designed to kill. He was interested in work that would benefit people. Primarily energy work.

He was manipulated into making the Death Star Superlaser. Krennic made him think it was an energy project called Celestial Power that would benefit people. This is covered in the book Catalyst.

Galen wouldn't have worked on something so destructive had he known the true purpose. That's why he fled the empire with his family.

I first read this and thought, nah, can't be right. But I checked out the book myself and here it is, clearly it's an IG88 toy! A lovely little Easter egg, although interesting I've not seen it come up before.

For me, this implies that IG droids were either more common than previously thought; or had a fearsome reputation that warranted a toy; or, as the original posted suggested, there's a link to Galen Erso somehow. If I had a choice I'd go for the first theory.

Edit: having trouble uploading the image, search for Jyns toys and it's easy to spot.

Here you go.

The theory I like best is that the empire had bounty hunters looking for the Ersos and they had a run in with IG-88. All of Jyn's toys are handmade.

I hope that the IG's weren't designed by Galen. I already have a hard time that C3P0 was build by lil' Ani. I feel like there was a reference to the IG's being quite old even in the clone wars era. I'm thinking I read this in the clone wars book (novelization of the animated movie), which is presumably new canon? I hope they are really old and have a unique backstory that we'll learn when they release a new Knights of the Old Republic era canon video game (pure speculation).

I assume Anakin found the parts for 3PO in a junkyard, rather than built him completely from scratch. If it was a scratch-build he wouldn't be a standard model droid, but something more unique.

For sure. I'm sure the 3P0 units were designed elsewhere. I just have trouble with the idea of this particular tie in. In general, I love tie in's but this was just a little too gratuitous and pseudo-incestuous.

IG-88A's personality matrix could be new, in an older droid body, not unlike the Vader comic droids. Still not saying Galen would've willingly made IG, though, as that would've been wildly out of character.

If anything, as I alluded to earlier, perhaps it was another safeguard against the Death Star that ended up horribly backfiring.
