Tournament Data Collection - feedback wanted

By shmitty, in Star Wars: Armada

With some help from @Baltanok , I am currently performing a major overhaul on the spreadsheet that I use to track tournament data. Most of the changes will be behind the scenes formula stuff, but I am also going to be adding in some new metrics. The plan is to roll out the new sheet for the Store Championships season. Some of the new things it will track include:

  • The usage of different ship variants
  • The percentage of points spent on ships/squadrons/upgrades
  • Usage of Accuracy generating upgrades and Boarding Parties
  • An updated version of "Motti scale" and another similar metric based on firepower if I can make it work

As I am currently gutting things and re-writing many of the formulas from scratch, if there is a stat or upgrade you've always wanted tracked please let me know.

Also, the separate tabs for Winner/Top 4/Top8/etc may go away. Does anyone like being able to browse the fleets/data on those tabs?

Let me know what you would like to see.

You da man @shmitty ! Thanks!

Do you have a template file for folks to submit tournament lists? I know you've focused on Regionals in the past but I think it would be instructive to see if lists are starting to percolate in smaller tournaments before a regionals. A template file would make it much easier to submit those.

As to other metrics, ratio of aces to generic squadrons would be nice.

Something like a template is being worked on.

I think there is a ratio of aces to generics buried somewhere in the squadron data. @Baltanok has done some excellent work with the squadron data, but we need to work on making it more accessible.

unique/generic: Take a look at the W5 regionals data sheet, squadrons tab, cell DR91. Starting around 40%, rising as you get towards the top tables. (surprisingly, dropping back for winners, but small sample size means that number is unreliable.)

I understand it's pretty hard to find things in there. Sorry about that. Probably we should pick a few key squad metrics & put them on a results page, instead of burying it all on the same tab that the data & first-stage analysis goes on.

I think either shifting all of your metrics to the top left of the page or creating a separate tab just for squadron metrics would be awesome. You have some great data in there.

Top left is easy. I like the idea of the separate tab for key metrics as well, so most people can see the answer to "how much intel are people bringing" quickly, while the people who want to know about more fringe questions like "how were the various waves represented" can dig into the complete results.

Ideally it would be good to capture all the lists in the text format in one place. I'm currently working on a script that can load these and create either csv files that should be compatible with Excel (so loading up the fleets into shmitty's tamble would be a breeze) or get some statistics directly.

That sounds excellent. The trick for me has been the variety of ways that people submit things. Sometimes e-mail, sometimes forum post, occasionally a bunch of pictures.

Maybe a separate set of shared folders on Google Drive? I think that with picture submissions its still worth to type those lists in (I can volunteer to do that), then we can have a file per tournament.

I'm also looking at rolling out a player ranking system based on the WTA rankings. That should be fun.
