Fenn + Rangers = not bad?

By Rogue Dakotan, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Fenn Signis isn't the strongest card, but paired with some Rangers and camped near the back he could work pretty well.

Slap a Motivation on him and he can even reposition some rangers to better take advantage of his Trooper Assault.

Thoughts?

I ran exactly this in some friendly games about a month ago along with Obi-Wan, and it was quite a bit of fun! It didn't help my opponent's cause, though, that it was on a map where all of the objectives were in one room. Throwing Obi in there to deny them the objectives and then picking off anybody who got near with Fenn and the rangers, it was tough for him to get much going.

I mean it's not going to win any tournaments, but it was a way for me to bring in one of my painted figures from the core set that I don't get to use very often.

@manatee_x I'm just getting started in IA and since you have experience with Fenn I thought I'd ask for clarification. His "Assault" states that he can perform multiple attacks each activation. How do you determine how many attacks he gets?

"Trooper Assault" seems simple enough to understand, but again, just want to get things straight before making assumptions. When Fenn is within 3 spaces of a group of Rangers, after one of them attacks and resolves, then that figure may attack again. Is that right? Also, "Limit once per round" does that mean Trooper Assault works once per round for only ONE figure, or do all the Rangers in that group within 3 spaces gain the Assault ability this round?

Thanks

Assault does not allow to actually perform any attacks. It just makes it possible to get around the one-action-containing-attacks per activation restriction of non-heroes (everyone in skirmish is a non-hero). I.e. with Assault Fenn can perform attacks with all of his actions. (See also E-Web Engineer. In addition to Assault, the E-Web has Tripod, which limits the usefulness of Assault.)

Trooper Assault can only give one friendly Trooper Assault per round.

Yep, like A1bert said you still get two actions per round. Fenn's Assault just allows you to make both of those actions attacks, whereas normally in skirmish you're limited to one action that contains an attack in it. And the Trooper Assault works like you describe it, but only for one trooper each round.

Thanks guys.

I've tried the Fenn + Rangers schtick, and I've found the combination to be too gimmicky, and situational. For a point less, you're better off having Leia Organa in your Rangers team instead to make use of "Battlefield Leadership". If you're running the eAlliance Rangers then have 'Call the Vanguard' in your command deck for more interrupt shenanigans.

Spitty makes a good point, I started looking at this from different angles and I just can't get over Fenn's cost for what he brings. That being said I still want to try this for fun.

9 Fenn
12 E. Rangers
3 Gideon
2 Threepio

14 points left, Jedi Luke and a Smuggler? Luke on his own out there could be scary, I always loved having Obi-Wan to soak damage.

I've run:

Fenn

2x E rangers

gideon

Threepio

RHC.
it can be pretty fun and with 6 of those troopers running around, it isn't hard to use the assault.
