Angu Drombb [Long Arm of the Hutt]

By Aurin, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey everyone - I'm about to run Long Arm of the Hutt and I was looking for a description for Angu Drombb but there didn't appear to be one when I flipped through. Has anyone come across this in another piece of published material anywhere?

I didn't see a physical description of him when I ran it. In my mind's eye, he looks like a younger (and slightly slimmer) version of Baron Harkonnen from David Lynch's Dune.

Make something up.

The Cannon police won't come and break your knees if you get it wrong.

I used this pic: Click me!

Actually, here, take the whole shebang: No, click ME!

(sure hope I did those right...)

Super helpful - thanks everyone!

And for the record, I'm not religious about my canon-sticking behavior, but I enjoy being consistent to the extent that it is possible :)

Also, quick follow-up question. Anyone know how @The Grand Falloon did the SW fonts on his character art?

Tell that to my knees. I'm still smarting after changing the timeline for the subjugation of Sriluur.

Dang, you asked me that months ago and I didn't get back to you, I think.

This is off the top of my head since I'm not at the computer.

Okay, you'll need... Star Jedi font? I think. I'll have to check later. You'll also want a decent photo editor, like Photoshop or Gimp. Make a new text layer, set the color to white, and type your names. To get that outline effect you need to mess with the Layer Options, and I think it's a black... Spread?

Yeah, these directions are terrible, but hopefully writing it wrong will remind me to check in the morning and write them correctly.

There is also a Sta Jedi Outline font available.

That might be easier, for folks starting out. Type it with a black outline, then maybe use the paint bucket tool to turn everything inside the letters white. Not sure how well that would work, but maybe I'll play with that today.

Okay, so this is basically how you get that effect. You will need the Star Jedi font and a program called GIMP. It's about as powerful as Adobe Photoshop, but it's totally free. Unfortunately, it's a little less intuitive.
Anyway, GIMP works in layers, so you can edit pieces without affecting the rest of the image. Open your portrait in GIMP, then use the Text tool. Select the Star Jedi font, and plain white as your color. Type in the name, resizing and such until it looks pretty much how you want it. Because it's a layer, you can move the text around and play with it without affecting the background image. When you have it properly placed, go up to the Filters drop-down menu, then "Light and Shadow, and select "Drop Shadow." This will give you a little menu box. Set the X and Y Offset to zero. This will keep the shadow centered. Slide the opacity to 100%, which will make it nice and dark. I set the "Blur Radius" to 30 or 40, but this will depend on the size of your picture and what you prefer. When you click "OK," you should see a shadowed outline around your text. If it's not dark enough, go back up to Filters, and select "Repeat Drop Shadow." You can do this again and again until it's as dark as you want it.

To save your picture, you'll need to go to "File," "Export as" and then save it as... I would probably just pick JPEG or PNG. Be aware that it squashes the image down to a single layer, as most image formats do not support layers. While you're working, just save your work occasionally, and it will store it in the GIMP format. That will let you go back and fiddle with it without having to start over.

You wouldn't fill the center of an outline font. They are just outlines with nothing in the center. If you want aolid letters with a stroke around it, you need to use the standard font, not the outline font.

Yeah, I was trying to think of a way to achieve a similar effect in a basic image editor, but I think you'd be more likely to just have a mess on your hands trying to use a fill.

Well, I have both fonts and use them for certain projects. I work in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Outline fonts have their uses as do solid fonts.

Are you sure that's not a Homer Simpson fan art of some sort?

EDIT: It totally is. His arm tattoo says Marge.

Thanks everyone, this is exactly what I was looking for (particularly @The Grand Falloon for the tutorial - I'm going to give this a try). I think I'm going to have some art commissioned for Angu and I'll share it here when I get it done.

I want to be able to replicate the yellow / red text from the modules (example below). Should be the same instructions, right?

Well, that's a little different. The "shadow" that the text is dropping onto the map is certainly a Drop-Shadow effect, and helps give the illusion of depth. The red edge is a little different. I'm a recent convert to GIMP, as I'm trying too be a good boy and not pirate software (It has nothing to do with torrent sites dropping like flies and being a hassle to begin with, I swear! I've gone straight, I tells ya!). This unfortunately leaves me trying to relearn a bunch of things, and this one's giving me trouble. I'll keep you posted if I figure it out.

Actually, just go here: http://en.linuxreviews.org/HOWTO_outline_text_in_GIMP That's a better explanation than I would have given. That will give you your outline, then just do a Drop Shadow from the Text layer.

So it's been five months and I'm still yet to try out the Gimp software, but it's still on my to-do list! Sometime life gets the best of you...

But in other news, I had a piece of art commissioned for Angu Drombb by David Kegg. Wanted to share...
