Epic Deployment Question

By ge0rd1eb4lls, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi, got an odd one about epic deployment which I feel is unanswered anywhere else.

Lieutenant Dormitz in the Upsilon shuttle states that "During setup, friendly ships may be placed anywhere within the play area at Range 1-2 of you."

He is pilot skill 3. A Raider is Pilot Skill 4. I cannot find any rules about different deployment orders in Epic.

My buddy decided to be a colossal banana, place Dormitz at the limits of play and then dump the Raider (x2 Primary, OG, ETeam) in the middle of my field side as, technically, it was within Range 2 of Dormitz at the corner. I proceeded to get broadsided to hell and back first round and nearly lost my epic due to having barely any energy to counterattack.

Banana move, but legal, or illegal?

I don't see why he couldn't do that. You go in reverse PS order anyway, so he'd deploy a PS4 after a PS3. Plus IIRC all epic ships are deployed last anyway, although I can't seem to find the rule for that.

That's what I was thinking but I can't for love nor money find an actual rule on this. It's going to make for some very interesting tactical lists to specifically combat this.

Page 3 of the Epic ship rules pdf "Huge ships follow all standard setup rules"

So while it reeks of bananas, it seems totally legit.

Epic Tournament Rules update notes that Huge ships are placed before small/large ships.

  • Epic Dogfight Squad Deployment Procedure
  • 6. Players place any huge ships in ascending order of pilot skill...
  • 7. Players place their small and large ships in ascending order of pilot skill fully within range 1-2 of their player edge

As the tournament rules update is an improvement on the basic epic rules, it tends to get used more in even casual settings... Just something to be aware of.

This is correct. Huge ships should definitely be placed before all other ships, but in pilot skill order relative to other Huge ships. This helps to establish the layout of the battlefield right away and prevent shenanigans.

@LagJanson when did that update go in the epic tournament rules? Maybe it's specifically to cancel this combo

It's been there since the beginning; it's definitely not anything new.

So no Bananas :)

Thanks, I knew I had read it somewhere but couldn't find it. I may of been looking at the epic ships rules not the epic tournament rules.

Huge ships must touch their controlling player's board edge regardless of deployment shenanigans - even discarding the rule to place them before any other ship, so its a no-go either way.

Dormitz works best without a huge ship anyway.

Thats turn 1 before combat. Already at range 1 (:

And Carnor Jax up there is almost across the entire board on turn 1~
