Maybe I missed it but I can't find the amswer to this question:

Aftet I roll for an attack, do I have to assign damage before I make a possible morale test on the defender or can I do a morale test and then resolve/apply damage? Is it mandatory to do either one before the other?

Check out page 7 of the rules reference guide. It has all the steps of attacking. Resolving morale is always the very last step. If you roll the panic symbol you must resolve a test. Spending panic tokens is optional.
