Will it be possible to play any of the Six Great Clans (or Scorpion or Spider/Shadowlands) with the Core Set? Seems like there would have to be a lot of cards to have enough stuff to build faction-pure decks for all of the playable clans. Or maybe New-5R will have more mixed-faction deck-building?

I dont know who you are, but i will find you... (just created an account to do that)
To answer your Question: Yes, you can use the core set to play one of the seven(!) great clans. But probably you have to use some non-faction cards.
The current statement is that it is possible to play any of the 7 Great Clans from the Core box. But you'd need to have at least 2 to engage in any sort of serious deck-building.
For info, with the timeline being put back to about the time of 1E RPG, which is before any of the L5R CCG was set, the 7 clans are:
- Crab
- Crane
- Dragon
- Lion
- Phoenix
- Scorpion
- Unicorn

From the looks of things, there is no mechanic that lets you play another faction's dynasty cards, only their conflict cards.
So, playing an out of clan Character (which happened quite frequently in the CCG) doesn't seem to even be an option here.

This is quite a shame, since I see, if anything, more flavor in another clan having its own Steadfast Samurai, for example, or perhaps a dependable ally gained through an interclan marriage, than for a Crab to "Admit Defeat," or a Lion to stoop so low as to use "Blackmail."
I doubt you can build a clan pure deck with one core set, but should be able to with 2.
As far as mixing clans, I could see it being part of the game at some point. This is something that could be introduced in a later set.

Well, to be fair, the Scorpion were never one of the Original Great Clans, and they didn't come out as a faction until over six months after the first set where some old unaligned cards (like Hisa the ronin) got stuck into their clan (as Bayushi Hisa). Presumably their Great Clan status will be getting stripped again after Shoju and Yogo Junzu betray the Empire. You should never trust a Scorpion to do anything except sting you, for that little Scorpion can swim and runs on nothing but spite.

Well to be extra fair. The Scorpion WERE one of the original great clans until they were banished for starting the one thing they were trying to stop .... Prophesies suck that way

There is a difference between betraying the empire and betraying the emperor.
The Scorpion, guilty of so much, are only guilty of one of these actions.

And what is the Emerald Empire but the will of the Emperor?

Isn't it a chain reaction? My memory is a little hazy but I think the events went like so. Bayushi Shoju finds prophesy saying the hantei line must end to save the emperor. Shoju kills the emperor. Clans unite against them and Hantei the 39th banish the scorpion. In anger Scorpion Yogo Junzo opens up the black scroll releasing Fu Leng and starting the events of the clan war which Shoju was trying to prevent.

Well, that's what the Scorpion say happened...
Never the less: Bayushi was one of the nine Kamis and founded one of the original seven great clans. The Scorpion Clan. And now, in FFGs nL5R they never lost that status ![]()

Assumes facts not in evidence. We do not know FFGs history. It's entirely possible Scorpion (or anyone else) has lost and regained Great Clan status. For that matter, it's entirely possible any existing Great Clan did not start as one. Your statement is likely true, but at this point it's at least possible they want to play with the history a bit more.

That assumes that The Scorpion are the only ones responsible for the chain reaction. Shoju's actions were selfless, he knew his fate before the end, and accepted that fate.
However, the Phoenix, Lion, Unicorn, and Crane could have averted the war, but did not due to selfish actions. So who truly betrayed the empire? The one who did bad things for the right reasons, or the ones that did bad things for wrong reasons. This mainly serves as the crux of Toturi's original story.
All I know is; the Crab are blameless, and Kisada truly saved the empire thought his actions........

Btw: Great Job AllWings for making a thread called Utz! on the day FFG revealed their next article called Banzai! ![]()

Did he though? If he had kept his word with Shoju and stopped the other clans from interfering with the Coup, then Shoju might have succeeded in wiping out the Hantei bloodline for good.
Also, he led a giant Shadowlands army into the Empire. He's the worst kind of villain and a demonstration of the stupidity of the fan base.

What honor is to be had keeping your word to a traitor?
Who the hero is , and who the villain is, is all based on point of view. It is all relativistic, as it should be.
Except for the Spider clan...screw them...

Had Shoju won, Kisada would have been a traitor to the Shoju Dynasty. So that's relative too.

I realise that discussion here moves fast, but are we really that near light speed? ![]()
More seriously, even the Spider have their moments as heroes: particularly too western sensibilities, running away from an arranged marriage to marry the one you love is very heroic.

But Shoju's final realization is that he could never have won. Kisada just had the same realization earlier and took action as he did.....It will be interesting to see what direction the new lore can be pushed by the player base.
