Pilot cards

By 414taylor, in X-Wing

I have seen several variations of pilot cards and maneuver dials for clawcraft and tie droids. Has a consensus been reached on which ones to use for casual play?

uhm

isnt the point of that kind of casual play to just

pick what you like best

This is kind of true.

Any of them.

None of them.

Something in between.

There is no right answer because you really aren't going to find a massive consensus on them especially as you move away from just the base stats. You'll probably find a good bit of agreement about various base stats but even as you move into the action bar, upgrade slots, and dials you're going to see much less agreement. Moving on to pilot abilities and any new upgrades to go with them and you're back in the dark times.

I haven't seen CCL exact format on it. I know there is a vote but it isn't like the CCL organizers have made a consolidated (I don't know if that is the correct word since official is not an option) set list on said CCL ships dials and upgrade cards.

It would be nice if there was some sort of list, maybe a handicap incase some of the CCL get like super crazy OP. Players with a handicap cannot take any ships above the handicaped difference of their opponent.

  • handicap-0 Anyone can play, these are probably the ships that don't work to well and are under the power curve.
  • handicap-1 These are ships that are strong contenders to the meta.
  • handicap-2 These ships are better than meta ships (besides just being meta counters).
  • handicap-3 These ships are just completely OP and broken. Only use for casual or specific scenarios.

The problem is that if I choose scum clawcraft with 1 set of numbers and my opponent chooses imperial with another set of different numbers, there is a problem. Whose stats are chosen? I suppose we could agree which to use but it could be a hassle if we don't know each other. Even though I said in past threads that I playcasual only, I still like to follow rules,FAQs,etc.

I'll think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who would rock up to a FLGS with custom ships/cards etc. and expect to field them. Personally, I wouldn't play against someone who showed up - even on a casual night - with the expectation they would be able to field custom ships/cards.

Here's your problem.

For any use of custom cards, you really need to have a previous understanding and/or discussion with each person playing. Walking up to a complete stranger and wanting to use custom cards is likely to be awkward for both of you. Some people don't like custom stuff at all. Organized stuff like the Custom Card League handles that for you, as anyone that wants to play in the CCL understands the ground rules of it when they get into it.

Someone like me might be able to look over a ship card and dial at the FLGS, get a rough idea of its "balance" in a few seconds and shrug yeah / nah about it for casual games ('cause whythefuqnaught), but others might be taken aback about having to make such colossal decisions about the math-wing point values of a green 2 turn or a 3K vs 4K and mentally shut down. The last thing you want on game night is someone in the corner doing calculus for an hour of playtime, cause now your down a person for games. And its weird.

No one should be doing calculus when its time to pew-pew spaceships.
