Toxic Stereotypes

This sort of, kind of, relates to stereotypes, I guess, but I'd hope it is not resolved without bloodshed. The stereotype (see, I'm working in the thread topic ;) ) for L5R players is that we want our clans to be peaceful, but the story - and the stereotypical samurai - needs violence to work well. Especially at the tail of AEG's ownership, we saw a lot of conflicts resolved peacefully, usually as a result of player choices, and I think the story suffered for it. I'm hoping FFG is willing to allow a lot more bad blood to develop between the clans.

That said, I'd fully support the OP, in that bad blood between the clans absolutely should not translate into bad blood between the players, who after all, are all here to enjoy the game. (Mind you, the occasional bit of trash talk is fine - that's part of the fun too, just don't take it too far...)

I absolutely agree with that. In fact what I ultimately want is for peace with the Lion to fall apart, as it likely will, and for the Unicorn and Crane to find common cause against them. It's just that I roleplay as an Ide and have to pay lip service to the idea that war is always unfortunate and a failure to compromise.

Maybe the better goal would be a broader one: good sportsmanship.

Every negative stereotype I have of L5R players is based on a lack of good sportsmanship.

I experienced a fight break out between 2 players over a Heroclix game years ago. It started over a rules dispute and got heated fast. I told them to take it outside and the larger of the 2 guys pummeled the little dude. There was no emotional attachment to the characters they were using; it was all about the mechanics in the game.

I think if FFG manages to make the rules clear and concise, then we won't see too many disputes over rules. The ego and pride is a terrible affront to civil discourse.

I had no idea people like HeroClix that much.

Well, not that one guy, that's for sure.

Cardinal Rule: Don't Be a Jerk.

Sure, we can relate it to things like Phoneix players knowing how to take one on the chin for the greater good, or to Crane being big in Courtesy, but...

We're not samurai. We're schlubs playing a card game. And as such, it behooves us to endorse good sportsmanship in a general way.

I don't believe anyone here is insisting that we abide by the tenets of Bushido - if anything, Shourido is more applicable to real-life conduct, particularly in the West. But the game is, after all, an escape from real life, and because the nature of the game's ongoing storyline fosters an attachment to the setting and certain clans within it, inevitably some are going to approach the topic of sportsmanship in an especially Rokugani way, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Give me all the conflict I can get in the story! That just makes things interesting and we all want interesting stories. Bad blood between Clans or characters of different Clans is a great reason to get involved in some good-natured trashing talking between players. I don't want to actually fight a Lion player or a Scorpion player or anyone else in real life but it's fun to have those "My Clan just beat up your Clan" moments. We have to be careful not to let any of that bleed over into real life. Players are just like anyone else in the real world - they come in all varieties. I know (insert Clan here) players that are fun and pleasant and I know players of that same Clan that are total jerks - it's not the Clan player part of them that makes them that way, it's the rest of their personality. Same goes for players of other Clans, mercenary players, dabblers in everything, and any other category of player. This applies to real life too - religions, political leanings, sports fans, jobs, etc.

While I never took any of that kind of thing seriously I always enjoyed playing as a member of my clan(which is crab) and responding to my opponent in kind. So if my opponent is playing crane I mock them as weaklings only able to fight after having tea with the emperor or commenting on unicorn always running away from the real fights. I can be overly blunt but that's me and possibly why I like the crab, but anything I say about another clan or a player of that clan is in jest because that little bit of RP is fun and one of the reasons the old community was interesting. I hear stories of Kisada's wake for the how things went down on the second day of thunder event and its how the players take on there clan that makes it interesting. I can see someone taking it too far but I never though something like he plays scorpion so he might cheat.

I like HeroClix a lot more than I like Wizkids. (And I'm a former volunteer for them.)
