Regional vs Store Championships?

By TBot, in X-Wing

Can someone explain the difference between these two events? Is the only difference that a regional win will qualify you for Nationals/Worlds, and a store championship doesnt?

Are there usually bigger turnouts for a regionals over a store championship?

Are the prizes better or the same for both events?

Store Champs are the first step in the competitive circuit. Winning a store champ gives you a pass for a free bye at a Regional event . Winning a regional gives you a free Bye for a nationals event. There's also more store championsihps - as far as I know any store can potentially get a store championship if they request one, while regionals are spread out and intended to be fore entire regions (hence the name. For example, I have 3 local store championships, but only 1 regional.

As for qualifying for nationals/worlds, a regional win will give you a guaranteed seat for worlds (if you choose to go), but anyone can potentially go to worlds as long as sthey manage to buy a ticket before they sell out regardless of whether they've won events or not.

Prizes are typically better for regionals (IIRC store hamps this year has range rulers. The last regionals had dice and templates), and regional prizes definitely sell for more than store championship prizes

Ahh OK thanks for the answer man. That was very thorough!

Each "Region," which is usually five or six states in the U.S. for example, only get 2-3 Regional Events.

On the other hand, every single store with enough space can host a Store Championship, so in the US each state might have 5-6 store championships.

This tends to make turnout for Regional events much larger, since there are fewer of them. This also makes Regionals more prestigious, whatever that means in the world of X-Wing. Prizes are pretty comparable at both, though secondary market values are higher for Regionals' prizes since there are fewer. Also, typically more % of the people get the TOP64 card at a Store Champhionship, since attendance is lower.

Heh, that's for sure. With Store Championships potential happening at any eligible store, you can make the rounds of championships, getting the prizes several times over (depending on performance). I got more alt art participation prizes of just one card then I can actually do stuff with.
