Your Definition of an Omelette

By chervorlovesu, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Alright team, big question here.

What is your definition of an omelette?

I keep it simple: literally any folded eggs. I take my idea from the homeboy Jaques Pepin, who just folds very runny scrambled eggs to create an omelette.

Others believe it has to have stuff in it.

I need to know what my x-wing brethren think.

I suppose any folded egg will fulfill the criteria, but it's such a great vehicle for flavor, that you're losing out on all the wonderful possibilities. The potential is unfulfilled without a filling.

Is two pieces of bread a sandwich? Seems to me the answer is the same.

Folded eggs may be an omelette yes, but is it the best possible omelette? No. No it is not. Fill it with delicious things.

Depends on the country I think, I saw an episode of tested in which Adam and a cook made an omelette and she just used eggs and many in the comments said that's not an omelette but some pointed out it's the french original version or something like that as she herself said.

So it probably depends on country and taste/preferences, here in germany we have pizza hawai which is pizza with pineapples and ham which as far as I knwo doesn't exist everywhere.

For me I just want ham in an omelette because I want to eat it with my breakfast not as my whole breakfast.

We eat Hawaiian pizza out here in California too. But a lot of people think we're a bit off because we're from California.

Ah ok, but at least my italian cousin thinks it's strange and not really a pizza but she hates pineapples :D.

Just thought it's not so known because one of the Finebros react videos were some people react to pizza and the hawaiin one was one of them and judging from the commenst it seemed many didn't know or thought it is strange.

It's a fairly common pizza in the states. Pineapple and ham or some sort of dead pig on it...

Which reminds me of a line from a Dresden file book...

Quote

“Oh, what would you like on your vegetarian pizza?"

"Dead pigs and cows," I said. She glanced up at me and wrinkled her nose.

"They're vegetarians," I said defensively.”

I am of the idea that an omelette must have stuff in it to be an omelette. On the other hand, eggs are stuff, so as long as it is folded eggs with eggs in it I suppose it counts.

It would have to have something in it. At a bar minimum just cheese.

Otherwise to me what you have is....

Well.....folded eggs.

Yes but per Merriam-Webster the definition is... "beaten eggs cooked without stirring until set and served folded in half." So it doesn't need a filling, since the word seems to simply mean folded eggs.

My kids call that an egg tortilla.

Somewhat along those lines: @Iceeagle85 do you have Mexican restaurants in Germany? Just curious. I tried Mexican food in Tokyo once, and it was... not what I'm used to. They seemed to put a fried egg on almost everything for some reason. And anything apple related like juice or frozen Popsicles were the best I've ever had.

Just eggs is a fine base to start from. Like classic risotto bianca or béchamel sauce is a fine base to start from.

I like cheese and chopped chives. Or mushrooms.

What I really dislike though are omelettes that look like scrambled eggs.

A chef friend of mine once prepared omelettes for us with goat cheese and basil leaves. After the eggs set and he folded it, he stuck them in the broiler for like a minute. Best omelette I've had to date.

I tried to replicate it weeks later without success.

Just asked the internet about mexican restaurants in the next big city and there seem to be at least three one of which i have walked by when going to get myself an ice cream, thanks to you I know now that Enchilada is a mexican restaurant and a name for a mexican food.:D
But I have never been in one.

Ever had an avocado?

They're good on Mexican food--and omelettes.

Aaaaaand now I'm hungry.

Thanks, guys!

Mexican food is the best.

Wait, scratch that, the best Mexican food is the best. Not faux Mexican food, real Mexican food. Free flavours and fresh ingredients. Lime, avocado, cilantro, tomatoes, tomatillos. Slow cooked meats. Freshly made ceviche. Fresh, warm tortillas. Chillies. And yes, eggs. Huervos rancheros is my Sunday lunchtime favourite.

I made pork pibil a couple of weeks ago. Amazing, turned the leftovers into chimichangas.

No problem, we like to help

¡Sí! Es múy délicioso. Es mi favorito también.

I always felt that R2-D2 was from Mexico, with his hot temper and that accent of his. A true Astro-Mex droid if there ever was one. :P

We're fortunate to have a real Mexican restaurant in town, as in it's owned by a chef who came up here from Mexico and makes some of the best food I've had.

My brother made Tuna Ceviche one year for Christmas and it was the Bomb!

It's true ...until you accidentally get menudo .....tripe is....not food.

I like the broth and the hominy and the other things, just not the tripe. Chicken pozolé is the way to go if you're not into having menudo; they're kissing cousins.

IMHO, an omelette mandates inclusions. Otherwise, it's scrambled eggs.

No, scrambled eggs are scrambled eggs. An omlette without filling is still an omlette I'd always include Avocado, but if you have some high end, maybe not chicken eggs, it is a fine way to enjoy them. Scrambled egg is very different in texture, so while it is basicaly the same thing, the steps where you do deviate make enough of a difference for me.
