Backdraft + Spec Ops

By LastRaven, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey, guys not sure how to interpret the use of Spec Ops. So as it sounds you would get to choose which of the two types of fire you choose. However, I was playing a game and one of my buddies was saying that you have to have a primary arc target and shoot to choose to use the aux arc ability.
A tib bit confused so if anyone can help clear this up that would be great, Thanks!

Backdraft + Spec Ops has a few options for attacking. (None of this is including range bonuses)

1) 3 dice out the front on legal target that is only in your front arc.

2) 2 dice (+1 Crit result) out the rear on a legal target that is only in your rear arc.

3) 2 dice out the front arc on a legal target that is only in your front arc + 2 dice (+1 Crit Result) out the rear on a legal target that is only in your rear arc

4) 2 dice (+1 Crit result) out of the front on a legal target that is within both your front & rear arc + 2 dice (+1 Crit result) out the rear on a legal target that is in your rear arc.

Long story short, you can shoot out of the rear arc without a target in your primary arc, but you cannot double-tap out of the rear arc. Also, in the case of option #4, this would be if you pull up alongside a large-base ship to where it is within both your front & rear arcs. Backdraft only requires the target to be in your rear arc, not being shot at out of the rear arc.

Hope this helps!

That actually clears it up a lot, thanks a ton!

This have nothing to do with Spec Ops... the rear arc is a regular auxiliary arc like the one on the Firespray, you can always use it, title or not. Ok there is no reason to play without the title, but this is not the title that enable the rear arc.

Edit: In contrast to the Ghost, that need an Upgrade to let it shoot from its special arc.

You forgot some options: 1a: 2 dice out the front, nothing out the rear. Why you'd want to skip the extra die isn't clear, but it is an option, and 4a: 2 dice+crit out the front against a target in both arcs, same deal.

5: Missile out the front, nothing out the rear.

I knew I had forgotten something!

I'm having a brain fart here. Where's the +1 crit coming from?

I thought I read Quickdraw. I'm an idiot.

From Backdrafts ability.

Actually there is one option more.
Going by the wording you can also add a Crit out of your front arch if you are firing at a ship that falls inside both your front and rear arch.

Landing in the sweet spot alongside a Large base ship, would net you 3Dice+1crit from the front followed by 3 Dice+1 crit from the rear. Its a rare occurance, but brutal when you pull it off

It's rare but fun when you pull it off. Got this against a Jumpmaster a few weeks ago:

Frank Brooks has confirmed via email that adding a crit to both attacks in this situation is valid.
