Jess Pava 2 times in the final?

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing

Who what? Why? =)

Also, Tel trevura.

If the other three jumpmaster pilots were not around, Tel Trevura would have been a meta-monster for years now.

Right? I'm looking at Jess and her ability and the upgrades and... well, I'm just not seeing it. What makes her work so well? Can someone please expound on this for me?

thanks in advance.

She gets rerolls

Jess flying in formation with others is one of the most cost-efficient ships in the game.

Think of her ability as Predator that can go up to 3 re-rolls and works for defense too. She's only one point over generic, while also getting +1 PS, making her TLT Ys hunter and negating full Predator bonus for the enemy.

Since many competitive Rebel builds are forced to take Biggs - implying formation, she's a perfect pick. She even gets a new shiny Astro to grant the Predator effect to one of her mod-starved allies.

Exactly. Remember that thing called Dengaroo that used to exist? Remember how Dengar always had Lone Wolf active, so every attack and attack against him he got to reroll a die? Well, Jess does that, except usually more than one reroll. Her ability is nuts good.

Been flying variations of Tel/Bossk for a year now. He is great endgame. :)

Dengar-Tel has such advantages over Dengar-Bossk that I am ashamed to say I never tried it. I can't quite get the points to fit on a crazy Fenn, Dengar, and Talonbane list where Dengar drops the title for torpedoes.

Other random thoughts: was TLT well represented overall? I didn't see much on the streams. Anyone worried about TelGar try running Rey-Poe with Black One and Countermeasures.

Tel is the "tame" JM5K, still pretty dang powerful but horribly overshadowed for so long by the other 3. Even as it is im surprised to see Tel at all considering Dengar and even the generic tends to outshine him. Dengar is the powerhouse, generic is the shenanigans guy (bumpmaster)

Jess is an unsung hero of T70 pilots. I use her quite a bit, especially in 3-4ship lists as shes relatively cheap and surprisingly good due to the rerolls. Surprised it took this long for someone in the top brackets to notice her.

When Jess's ability was first revealed, I was disappointed with how dependent it was, but I'm happy to say I was wrong about that. Go, Jess!

There's not a list I will run without my bae JP.

Before this weekend I could have even told anyone what her ability was. Do people ever run her with some A's and swarm leader?

With 25p you get reroll on attacks and defences for every friendly ship at range 1. Good price, good upgrades and excellent skill! Rerolls are very valuable things in dice based game, you get your probabilities stacked up a lot. No magic there!

Kinda proves my point that people are not exploring original ideas for squads.

Not too long ago, someone wrote up a report for a list just like that.

I've used her in a squad with Poe and super-arcdodge Nien Numb. She's able to work well both as an attacker with her free rerolls, as well as working as serving as a PS3 blocker.

That said, I was still surprised to see her do as well as she did at this tourney.

I make it to about 2 tournaments per year. I am not typical :)

I like people taking something other than "meta" to tournaments, not only it helps to dissolve that slowly but it is awesome to see people doing ballsy appearances in tournaments. Just like you would do home with your friends, casual fun!

Yes,

It hits like a ton of bricks but is hard to keep going after the initial joust.

The best competitive ships have typically always been those that could squeeze the most out of their dice modification and/or action economy:

  • Howlrunner Swarms getting rerolls on every attack.
  • Han Shot First , with Han's reroll + Marksmanship + Gunner to compensate for bad rolls
  • Dual Falcons with Lando action-stacking and Gunners to compensate for bad rolls, and later Threepio/R2D2 as free "evades"
  • BBBB with free TLs (FCS)
  • Corran Horn with free TL (FCS) and often PtL, and a free "evade" from R2D2
  • Whisper with her stacking of Focus (innate ability), Cloak (ACD), Evade (action bar), TL (FCS), and Gunner
  • Super Dash with his PtL and Kyle Focus for 3 actions a turn
  • RAC with his free mini-Focus effect, often with Isard (free Evade) and Gunner
  • BroBots with with Free Evade (IG88c) and free TL (FCS), sometimes with PtL (or Glitter as a free super Focus) and Gunner (IG88b)
  • Poe with a free mini-Focus on every roll, and a free psuedo-evade with R2D2 or R5P9
  • Palp Aces with Palp's perfect set, and Soontir and Inq with their three actions per turn
  • Triple Scouts with Recon and Aggro (for F+TL) with Guidance Chips [pre nerfs]
  • Dengaroo with rerolls (LW) and Focus (R4) on every roll [pre nerfs]
  • X7s with free Evade, and in the case of Vessery free TL
  • Ghost with free Focus (Rey/Recon) and TL (FCS)
  • Parattani with free Focus (Mindlink) for everyone, and in the case of Assajj free Evade (Latts) and Fenn free Evade (CDP)

Only with very rare exceptions have competitive things existed that didn't possess extreme dice modification and/or action economy:

  • Biggs -- Protects the valuable ships that have action economy and/or dice reliability
  • Stresshog -- Stresses opponent to deny action economy and/or dice reliability
  • TLT - Attacks in such a way as to get consistency without action-economy or dice modification
  • Miranda - Though, with a TLT and her Regen ability (which simulates a free "evade" pretty well) she's basically got it
  • Sabine/Bombs - Direct damage is a means to get past opponent's defense dice modification
  • Jax/Omega Leader /Wampa - shut down opponent's hyper modifications
  • Zuckuss/4-LOM (crew) - shut down opponent's hyper modifications

At some point, you'd think FFG would realize that competitive ships require abnormally high action-economy or other means to have exceptional dice modification, because this is always better than other sorts of gimmicks (e.g. Whisper > Echo, Turr Phennir > Tetran Cowall, FCS > every other system slot, Regen/R3A2 > every other astromech, Kanan > Hera, Poe > Ello, etc. ).

JESS PAVA is good because her ability gives her dice modification on every roll, so for squads that have use for a cheap filler that wants to fly in formation she's worth the points, especially if you give her a stress droid to make her doubly-useful (quality attack + control element).

I've seen it. It's pretty mean. SHe packs a heck of a punch. But focussing down her teammates is relatively easy.
