Range and Move Template comparisons.

By WWHSD, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Since you can measure range to anything at any time, I figured it would make sense to know what the relation ships between range and movement template was. Because of the extra cardboard on the end of the movement templates it was a little deceptive trying to eyeball it. I grabbed some cardboard and marked everything out to see how things actually line up. A move of speed X appears to be one inch shorter than range X would be.

This also explains why range 1 is slightly longer than all of the other ranges. It accounts for the length of movement templates that make up the guides.

Hmm, thats oddly convenient. Each number speed is pretty much right at the top of the range number. Thats some valuable information!

Oh Snap! I didn't notice that.

Now I just need to figure out how the bank and turns relate to the range ruler.

Heh i actually noticed that first. Im used to Xwing simply having "sizes" rather than measurements so ive thrown my 40k "premeasured eye" out the window. I look for patterns, and it lets me fly in xwing wonderfully. Xwing doesnt have markers on the range stick common enough to bother with, RWM does...and theyre not only consistent but theyre spot on accurate!
I was curious how i could correlate that in RWM since it feels like the distances are massive. From memory i think the wheels are 1/2 the distance of their corresponding straight speed. Bigger issue with turn/wheels would be predicting the fishtail effect on larger units rather than the distance traveled.

For anyone who hasn't measured them yet, each movement segment is right on at 2.50". Each range band is the same 2.5", with the exception of range band one which is (nominally) 3.5". You get a free inch for range one. Well, almost. The rounded corners on the tail of the arrow at range one mean you're just a bit shy. If they were perfectly sharp corners, you'd get a perfect 3.50" range one.

Turns and wheels are... more complicated to describe.

I broke out the wheel and turn templates and took a few pictures. I'm at a loss for out to easily remember where they end up in reference to the rage ruler but I figured that someone might notice something.

its...its the same thing...

Look at the edge of the base after you move...its almost spot on right at the top of the range's number. Its not 100% foolproof to think that way (the 2wheel looks to be slightly further than the #2 on the ruler and the 2 turn is slightly short ... more like middle of the #2 marker rather than at its top)

Also that tells me the turn (goddamn it BANK there i said it) is actually more like a 50-55 degree turn rather than 45, as its not perfectly lined up with the ruler. Interesting....
edit: actually i think its that way because if you look at the 1 ...turn... its almost touching the base from its original position. That might be why its not 45 degrees, so the bases dont fishtail into each other.

Man, they basically handed us the ultimate tool to premeasure the maneuvers without using the maneuvers lol. Thats...kinda funny actually. Im used to "counting bases" in xwing to eyeball my moves, which can get tricky beyond speed3

Looks like the 1 wheel put the leading corner about even with the top of the two and the 2 wheel puts the leading corner at about the line between 3 and 4. The wheels will always land you on the range ruler if placed at the corner.

I've noticed as well that the distance 1 movement template basically moves you one full "tray" if that makes sense. I looked at this recently and don't remember how it was exactly so I'll have to double check. However I believe that move 2 is about 2 trays long and so forth. I found that useful for calculating certain overlaps and terrain spacings as well.
