Upgrades for Kari's elf unit.

By WWHSD, in Runewars Rules Questions

"88.7 Upgrade cards that have a faction icon can only be equipped
in armies of that faction"

Based on that, Kari's elf buddies can equip upgrades that are restricted to the human faction but not ones restricted to elves, correct?

I get that it's entirely possible that when the elves drop that rules get added to specifically to deal with units being used outside of their own faction's armies but this seems to give clear clear direction on how to handle it.

I'm almost certain that a Latari unit in a Daqan Army will be able to take Latari only Upgrades and Neutral Upgrades and not Daqan only Upgrades.

As you say though by the strict wording of the rules at present they'd only be able to take Daqan Upgrades; but until their official launch with their associated rules there shouldn't really be any Latari units used in a Daqan force regardless of Kari's special rule.

The local players I've found are mostly already invested in other fantasy miniatures games and proxy heavily using those models. If FFG has spoiled something enough for it to be playable it is hitting the tables.

I don't have a problem with using proxies but until the actual models and any rules amendments for those models come out I'd stick with just using Neutral Upgrades on the unit as regardless of whether the unit gets to use Daqan or Latari upgrades it would always be allowed Neutral ones.

Rules-as-written, I would allow them to take Daqan upgrades.

Quite frankly i like the idea of them taking Daqan upgrades anyway. It seems to make sense if you have a small band of allies you share your gear with them, since they arent an army aiding you theyre just a single group of people.

Off the top of my head im not thinking of any Daqan cards that they'd love to have, but denying them Latari card also removes potential rule clashings with "nearby unit" stuff. Considering they have a lot of magic stuff i could see that being an issue in the future.

I'm wondering if that could cause some unforeseen consequences down the road if the Daqan get an upgrade that wasn't worded with Latari archers in mind.

It might. And if/when that happens, I hope FFG responds quickly with an erratum or clarification that fixes it. But I don't think it's a good idea to play rules the way we guess the designers intended. I think it's much better to figure out exactly what the rules say and play that way. If the result is unintended, then the designers/developers need to give us an updated rule, but as long as we play as written, we'll all be on the same page.

That being said, I think there's value in recognizing when something seems off so that you can be prepared for a future rule reversal. For example, it's very possible that the developers didn't consider faction-specific upgrades on the Deepwood Archers when used in a Daqan Army, or that they know how those upgrades are supposed to work and the rules we have weren't written with that in mind. So recognizing, as you did, that it may cause strange interactions in the future is good so that we can agree to play rules as written now, but with full understanding that the rule could be changed in the future.

Agreed. RAW as far as practical and then work it out with your opponent. I think there are pitfalls either way to the Latari unit being in a Daqan army. Allowing them to take Latari upgrades in a Daqan army or Daqan upgrades on a Latari unit both have some opportunity for broken synergies. I guess nobody should be getting married to a given build.

I suspect that you'll have more potential problems allowing Latari upgrades in Daqan armies than you will if you allow Daqan upgrades on a Latari unit in a Daqan army. You are only ever going to have Kari including one non-unique Latari infantry unit in a Daqan army at once. Even a couple of years from now there's probably going to be handful of units that meet that description. You may have dozens of Latari only upgrades released in that same time frame and that same single unit has the potential to bring 3-5 upgrade cards with it. Each of those cards need to be evaluated in conjunction with all of the Daqan units and upgrades. The number of potential combinations from allowing upgrades from the unit's faction instead of the armies faction are much greater.

The current rules seem to handle cross over units what is probably the most easily controllable fashion.

I think the army upgrades interpretation is the best, considering the Ardus spoiler.
