Is any of the previous fiction still canon?

By MonkeyClanMiko, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

For me it would depend on what and how they change things.

While I'm far from a canon purist I also don't want then to change everything so it stops being L5R and becomes a new game that just has the old label.

That said the old canon has some problems that need to be addressed. Things that where change to advances the story but jut did not fix snuggle into the timeline.

And other places that just make no sense due to writes or editors missing keep dates or names because of deadlines.

I just don't want to find that everything I know about L5R changes (Pre-coup)just so they can make it their own.

They could do away with the coup and have Fu Leng return another way and I would be fine with it, but if they start doing thing like changing the first Day of Thunder, not having Fu-Leng be the bad guy, getting rid of the battle of the White Stag, etc. then I'll be done with the frnchise and jut keep play the RPG in the AEG timelines.

Just to clarify this is my opinion, you are free to ignore it and make your own.

changing the first Day of Thunder

On a side note, I would like to say that I think this might be necessary. The First Day of Thunder is an okay-ish story as of now, but it can (should) be much better.

I... kinda hope we don't even do Day of Thunder. Many of the headaches of the original continuity arose from progressing past the prophesied defeat of Fu Leng...

I was speaking more to them change who the thunders where, that all but one died and that Fu-Leng was trapped in the scrolls. Was not really getting down to specifics on it. As you stated the story for what happened in the shadowlands is kind of iffy.

I will say I am all for FFG cleaning up the story or retelling parts that need to be fixed.I'm just against them totally rewriting the whole history of rokugan.

From what we have seen so far I would assume that the Unicorn Clan Thunder would be named Utaku not Otaku. So we have at least one change in the story. :P

I can also say, with absolute certainty, that there will not be a Crane Clan Thunder named Doji Hoturi.

Well since they have restarted the timeline from what appears to be before the scorpion clan coup the 2nd day of thunder is not history but the future.

On that note the 2nd day of thunder needs a complete over haul anyway since there seems to be two or more stories on what happen.

there was the story told in the RPG, the one from the novels, and I believe the one in the CCG was even different.

Overall I'm not a fan of the AEG story-line post Clan Wars so I will not be to upset if that changes.

Admittedly, I got attached to the original storyline, so I'm treating both as canon in the L5R multiverse... Another way I'm seeing this is that the Jade Sun and Obsidian Moon made the ultimate sacrifice after seeing Jigoku take over Rokugan and the Colonies under a failing leadership - and clicked the reset button... and then turned Hoturi and Yokatsu into girls.

works for me. Again just hope this is not a everything is different past included reset.

I would like an origin story of the Kami that is not an obvious palette-swap of that of the Greek pantheon. They can still "fall" from somewhere, as it appears they do, but I think it'd be cool if their story were unique unto themselves, or inspired by Asian folklore in some way.
