I'll believe it when b-wings... I mean pigs fly

By Rune Taq, in Star Wars: Armada

I suddenly feel like being crotchety and talking about how I played B-Wings before they were "good"...

B-Wings were always good. It's just the community's irrational dislike of them for some reason, I supposed it was speed.

They played to the "Imps charge at me and I net them with evil B-Wings"

They were hard to use in wave 1 and the speed was definitely a factor. You had to slow roll with the ships and use them as a buffer cloud. Wave 2 with Independence was the first time you could be aggressive with them.

Disagree. speed was a non issue you just had to park then in front of a vsd and season to taste

This is where rebs could actually go slow and bait the bull so to speak

This is exactly what that Worlds fighter Apocalypse list is designed to do... at least, the regional version here in the bay area. Bid to go second, pick objectives that you can rack up a lot of points with in your corner of the board, wait for the enemy to get into long range and annihilate them with bomber activations and BCC dice control.

If you're forcing the enemy to come to you to stop your flow of victory points, then your B-Wings are already where they need to be.

There was this thing called a Gladiator that tended to see more use. That's not to say they weren't doable. I did it. But if you think it wasn't significantly harder, you're looking at wave 1 through rose colored glasses.

Completely agree it was harder but not hard to use.

Distgusting. Everybody knows the B-Wing is a failure and the Y-Wing is the only bomber we need.

It's called the "Y" wing because that's what you ask when someone fields them :P

good one :)

in all seriousness though.. you can almost get 3 Y's for the price of 2 B's (28 to 30pts) and max damage of three Y's on ships is 6.. which is the same for 2 B's.. plus you get more speed that benefits from the same bonuses and boosts as the B's are getting. You do lose that one blue agains squads and they're heavy so they can't stick other fighters in place.. tradeoffs.. but I feel like Y's have their place.

I take Ys when I'm going to ignore enemy squadrons... I back Ys up with Intel, some escort, and, the lynchpin of Not Giving a Crap About Enemy Squadrons - Jamming Field.

Because crunching through 6 hull at a time when you've lost a dice, its painful to watch.

There are certainly tradeoffs. In a fleet with Yavaris, the B-Wings are vastly superior because they amplify the double tap far better and with the double tap are also more easily able to clear squadrons. Toryn Farr also helps their ant-ship and anti-squadron in addition to normal BCC buffs. Without attack amplification or in a non-dedicated carrier builds, the Y-Wings are more point and shoot, but Heavy does it make it harder for them to stop enemy bombers, so unlike the B-Wings, you need a more capable dedicated fighter wing or to simply hope you're trading better than the other player.

The cost difference is basically meaningless outside the HP comparison since 3 Y-Wings hit as hard against squadrons as 2 B-Wings and the damage on 3 black vs. 2 black and 2 blue is pretty much the same.

There you've got me.. B's synergize much better with Yavaris and Toryn..

I think what I really wanted to say was that Y's definitely have a place.. in my fleets at least. Often simply because of the economy of the points. I think that's where the scurrg gets lost... just costs too much compared to the cheap Y-wing and not as effective as the B-wing

i just think it wrong that the slowest ships in the game can out run a B wing or any fighter. :) and yes a speed two ship is faster then a speed two fighter, yes its about 3/8" but it is faster. ;)
