Tomorrow's Prophets, a bridge bewteen old and new L5R

By Tetsuhiko, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

A little history lesson, Tomorrow's Prophets started as a way for unofficial tournaments to continue to have story prizes. We imagined a way to create an alternate setting and offered winners a way to influence how this setting will develop. The basic idea is pretty straightforward, although a bit strange.

A monstrous entity known as Tomorrow, thought dead long ago, is freed from his prison and starts eating reality backward through time (Nezumi magic, also known as Dream Magic is known for weird time and causality effects). Deep within the Realm of Dreams, a city calls for heroes. Yogen-Sha Toshi, the city of Prophets, is the only chance reality has of defeating the monster. Who gets to be saved and how is then left in the hands of tournaments players.

The original idea was taking these survivors into the Realm of Dreams and having them searching for new survivors as Tomorrow was eating the timeline away, up until a point where Tomorrow is finally destroyed, and all the survivors brought back into reality, several decades before their time. They would then use their knowledge of the future to change how history unfolds itself. However, now that FFG revealed they are rebooting the timeline before the Scorpion Clan Coup, I realized we could instead use Tomorrow's Prophets as a bridge between the two timelines.

So here's the new idea. Tomorrow is eating reality backward while Yogen-Sha Toshi saves people by taking them into the Realm of Dreams. The Prophets then manage to defeat the beast, restoring the proper order of time, but playing with the timeline had repercusions. Several key moments of the past were changed and this new Rokugan looks the same, but the more you dig, the more differences you find. Survivors from the destroyed timeline are still trapped in the Realm of Dreams, alive and immortal, but unable to return to reality. They cannot directly influence this new timeline, but maybe through dreams they will be able to prevent people from making the same mistakes again.

We are far from finished, all the story prizes were selected, but more than a few stories still need to be told (and since english is not my native languages, I need help for that). If you want to follow the stories, you can check the links below. If you want to participate in the project, just send me a PM. Comments and suggestions, as always, are welcome.

EDIT: Fixed the order of the stories

For clarity's sake, I'd like to point out that Gathering of Forces comes before Those Left Behind.

And we do take request and ideas, if anyone would like to throw some in.

I very much support this endeavor, and have done so since I first heard about it.

I only played for a bit in late Gold/early Diamond, took a massive break, and then came back in Ivory. Due to circumstance, I was only able to go to one Kotei. It was the last official Kotei, so it was appropriate, but still kind of a bummer. I opened up the deck tin that had been sitting on my desk since the Kotei and got a bit nostalgic going through the deck I played.

I would love to play the CCG again, even just a little. Unfortunately the rest of the local play group has pretty much decided to not play the CCG ever again. And traveling to official events was hard enough so unofficial are essentially a no-go for me so let all of that pass me by and focused on other things.

What is the current status of the project? A quick look gives me the impression that all the tournaments have ended and the story prized just need to be reconciled, but I haven't read all the fictions.

Pretty much that. However, since the ending is probably going to change, we need to have a few brainstorming sessions to make everything as smooth as possible.

Add to that the fact we are a very limited team, and real life (unfortunatly) takes up the vast majority of our time, any outside help is welcome to spped up to process.

PS: For your information, here are the ''main'' story choices from the different tournament.

Save one of Iweko's children (Seiken)

Save two strongholds (Broken Wave City and Forgotten Temple)

Save one villain from Celestial (Paneki's Disgrace)

Save one contender for the throne (Akasha

Save one artifact from the Tomb of the Seven Thunders (Matsu's Ashes)

Save one villain from Diamond (Iuchiban)

Save one of Toturi's children (Sezaru)

Save one disbanded faction (Toturi's army)
