I know roll 20, but mostly that's done through voice it seems, are there any real time groups that use old fashiined text chat and dice roller?

I'd recommend Google Hangouts (the instant messenger function, not the video call function) and orokos.com. Oroko prevents cheating, as you can clearly see anyone's roll history (not that cheating is really a big deal for most players, but it's always advisable to remove the temptation).
I do a lot of play-by-post, and every one of them has a group message on Hangouts that we chat in and talk about less important game stuff. I'd think it would be a good platfrom to actually play a text-based, real time game in... of course, while it preserves your entire chat history, I can't find a good view of it to search through . You just gotta scroll up until you maybe find what you're looking for. That said, I think that's how most instant messengers work, so...
You can search FB messages on a desktop, possibly you could create a private page there with the players and use the messages feed to play "sessions"
Edit: private FB page is how my RL group keeps in touch with game details, well all except one guy who doesn't FB (or any social media!)
Edited by RichardbuxtonI play in Roll20 using just the text. It's very doable, the text chat included is pretty nice.
I guess I should specify, where would someone find games ran through txt rather then audio but in real time as opposed to pbp.
I looked at roll20-its all voice games... Im looking for a friend.
Sorry, no idea where to find them... :\
Good luck!
Yeah, finding them can be tricky. There are some on Roll20, but they're few and far between (you can set the search filter to "Text Only" to whittle it down a little).
