The KC area just had our first SoR legal tournaments. Saw a wide variety of decks, both old revisions and completely new ones. Jabba/Unkar and Jabba/Krennic mill was popular. There were a few Vader/Raider rebuilds and a Palpatine. I ran four character villains with 30 health and all the best cheap upgrades.

I did well, getting a Vader/Raider and splitting games against Jabba mill. But, in my last game, I ran into Maz/Poe. Guy did 30 damage to me at the end of turn 2. Wiped my whole board and I had even drawn two The Best Defense (ultimate elite Poe stopper card) in my opening hand. I thought it must have been a fluke, so we played again for fun. This time, I lasted one turn into round 3.

There were two Maz/Poe at the tourney. One went 4-0, the other 3-1. The only loss being the mirror match. That deck is super fast, super consistent with few weaknesses because it doesn't need resources or cards in hand after it's first action each turn. The guy I lost to was running 14 Legendaries in the deck.

I'm sure there's some deck builds out there that will find a way to give it a run, but that deck sets the new aggro standard in my opinion.

Poe/Maz is very strong. Decks that can mess with Poe's dice stand a chance. Won't be able to shut them both down unless you have "The Best Defense". I have already won an SoR tourney with it and only decks that even put up a fight were Phasma, Bala, Trooper and Vader, Raider.

Maz's speed makes it hard to manage, but good dice control goes a long way towards shutting this down. Since the deck relies on Poe's dice in the pool, you can recognize that you have a one action window (assuming no crazy action chain) to remove Poe's dice to lock down the combo. Even taking one of his dice with Electroshock, HDLY, Negotiate, whatever will make a big difference.

Maz also only has 8 health, which some aggro decks can kill very quickly -- with luck on turn one, by turn 2 at the latest. Poe/Maz is very strong, but if they can't contend with these fast aggro decks then you may not see much of them.

Mill decks are another archetype that's still up and coming, and they have all the tools to challenge this deck as well -- lots of discards for hand control, resource denial; and if Poe is pitching cards for damage then your opponent risks speeding up his own loss.

Poe/Maz is also probably one of the stronger archetypes against "swarm" decks like yours, because it has access to so many mass damage specials like Thermal Detonator or the U-Wing.

It's definitely a good deck to keep tabs on, but I'm not sure it will distort the meta that badly. If you were thinking of a counter, my first guess is run eNines and eVader (DA). As if the incredible damage faces weren't enough (it's not much of a stretch for them to kill Maz turn one), Nines can chain upgrades together to use his ability multiple times. Play a Holdout Blast, roll/resolve it; use the ambush action to overwrite it with another weapon, roll/resolve it; if you're crazy do it again, etc. The deck burns itself out quickly, but has a decent chance of killing Maz during (if not before!) the second turn.
