Simultaneous fire: shoot at already destroyed ship

By IG88E, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can I shoot at an already destroyed ship when the ship is already destroyed but not removed due to simultaneous fire?

Yes. Technically, it's not destroyed until it is removed from the table, it simply has enough damage cards to be destroyed

Yes. A model is either in play or it isn't. If it's still in play then you can be shot as normal. This occasionally makes Biggs happy.

To be fair, the rules reference is quite clear on the matter:

Quote

SIMULTANEOUS ATTACK RULE

During the Combat phase, all ships with a pilot skill value equal to the active ship have the opportunity to attack before being destroyed . If a ship would be destroyed and it has the same pilot skill value as the active ship but has not had an opportunity to attack yet, it is not destroyed . Instead, it retains its Damage cards and continues to function as normal, suffering any effects on its Damage cards. After it has had its opportunity to attack, it is destroyed and removed from the play area.

• Even if the ship did not have a valid target for an attack, it is removed after its opportunity to attack passes.

• While the Simultaneous Attack Rule keeps a ship in the play area, that ship’s abilities and Damage cards remain active.

• After a ship has resolved its opportunity to attack, before it is destroyed, it can resolve any abilities that trigger after performing an attack.

So in fact, there is no such thing as an already destroyed ship. Ships of the same PS as the current attacker that suffer lethal damage before performing an attack are not destroyed until after they attack. They are fully functional ships until they shoot.

Ok thanks

This interaction is the most cute when Biggs gets to stick around and soak extra fire after taking lethal damage.

Certainly!

And as nigeltastic points sometime you may even be REQUIRED to shoot at the ship that is already on the way out but hasn't made it there yet.

This not just the simultaneous fire rule. With the chart, you don't remove the ship until the last step.

With Miranda, if the first attack would destroy the Target, you can still shoot at it on the second TLT attack and remove a dice.
