Tips on facing a Decimator?

By sf1raptor, in X-Wing

Do y'all have some basic tips for facing a Deci? My brother uses it a lot and can fit two wingmen along with it. I don't want full lists or anything like that, just some tricks for taking down that blasted tank.

Focus fire, that zero agility doesn't do a whole lot for it

Cluster Missiles are pretty good against 0 agility targets. Also swarms can whittle it down very fast.

The tie punisher baby! Bombs and torpedoes are its worst enemy. Also swarms, it's one big gun that can only kill one tie or a wing at a time, and will not often one-shot them.

Damage and lots of it.

If your having trouble getting it in arc, block.

Stacking critical hits is good too

Shoot it. Seriously a large base and 0 agility means it eats ever hit it takes. Decimators don't last long against steady firepower.

Simple:

Commander Kenkirk (57) - VT-49 Decimator, VI (1), Rebel Captive (3), Ysanne Isard (4), Kylo Ren (3), Anti-Pursuit Lasers (2)

He uses the pilot I've dubbed Sir Ramsalot, so blocking isn't my first choice, but thanks for the tips guys.

Oh, oicunn, he's annoying, but relatively easy to predict (issue being that he moves before most pilots) so, get behind him and he cannot ram you, and light that battle tank up

Swarm them, I killed a full health decimator in one round of shooting with nothing but a swarm of scum Z-95s.

Like others have said, shoot it. A lot! Swarms are good, but so are 3 die heavy hitter ships. Also if you are flying high agility ships with 3 attacks (Tie Interceptors, Starvipers, Protectorates, etc) if you can stay at Range 3, your 4 greens should out last his 1. Also when it comes to Oicunn, people generally play in a way to maximize his bumps instead of playing in a way that is the best move in a situation. If you can bait him and then once he commits, zoom by him, it will take him some time to come around because the Decimator has no k turn. Just my two cents.

A high agility ship with autothrusters trailing the Decimator makes for an easy but protracted kill. Ion torps if you can sucker the Deci into coming too close to a board edge. Both have worked for me.

I have a 1 crew scum name for you. Boba Fett. As well what has been said already.

The high-tier Decimator players have a very effective strategy against 2-3 ship lists. You have to accept that:
1. If you're flying two ships, they'll bump one (probably Corran...) with the decimator, get an action from Dauntless then kll the other with Vader/Gunner/HotCop. If you can't get both your ships on target, you will lose.
2. If you're flying three ships, they'll often use engine upgrade to dodge one arc, be outside range of another and focus fire on the third. This is especially true of Chiraneau. You have to keep in formation, and preferably have an Ion turret...

I faced a 3 Decimator list once (125 points), and the oppoent was both undefeated and very chuffed with themselves. I killed every single one and only lost one ship (I believe - it was a while ago), simply because I focused one Deci down before the others got into range (Corran Horn is great ). In 100 point matchups, the trick is to stay at range 3, where they simply can't push damage through and you can. If you're flying a Ghost, Asajj or equivalent tank, joust them and win, though.

Astech nice points that you make. Thanks for letting us know some tips on some basic strategies ;) What you posted was very insightful.

Yes it was. Thanks.

I do know seeing 3 large ships with lots of health is very intimidating but with enough ships with 4 hull/shields they melt fast.

This is list dependant but if you have 3 or more ships you should be able to joust a decimator and handle the other ship after. Come at them fanned out and head on to block any boosts past your ships. Ideally approach at an angle that allows you to turn and pursue next turn.

Part of the issue in doing this is that you are likely to lose a ship. You need to make their best target the ship that least helps you against their 2nd ship. If you pull it off you can get crits onto the deci fast. You can kill the deci and pull away with 2 ships to their 1 as they have to chase since you have MOV.

Your other option is to pin down the deci partner but Imp Aces are built to be difficult to target.

Facing a decimator?!? If you encounter a hostile decimator in real life I suggest you surrender immidiately....

Spam TLT it can't avoid the damage and in two turns its dead.

If you have Thug Life (4 TLT thugs with Unhinged Astromech), shame on you. Nevertheless, TLT spam can be countered, especially if the escort is The Inquisitor or, to a lesser extent, Soontir.

If the Decimator bumps one of the Y-wings (a easy feat), and both it and Inquisitor/Other escort focus fire on another, they can kill a Y-wing every two turns quite reliably. Similarly, the Y-wings will deal 2 damage for each TLT shot. From turn to turn it looks like this:

Combat turn 0 (About to engage): Decimator H16, 4 Y-wings on table.
Turn 1: D-10, Y-4
Turn 2: D-6, Y-3
Turn 3: D-6, Y-2.5

At which point it's a autothrusters equipped ace agaust two and a half Y-wings. My experiments have shown that it's anyone's game from there 9Guri can solo 4 TLT thugs). Keep in mind this doesn't account for the no doubt numerous out of arc, range 1 scenarios where the Decimator will stay alive much, much longer. If the Decimator's escort is a Phantom, you'll lose a Y-wing every turn, and the game is lost before you bring down the Decimator.

As long as it doesn't have engine upgrade it's definitely beatable.

PWT's with engine are super annoying.
