So product issues not fixed?

By Gibbilo, in Star Wars: Destiny

Tried to tell my LGS to order me some starters. Was told they placed an order for Destiny but were not told what they would actually be getting. May 4th came and went, they ended up being shipped a single booster box and nothing else; which was completely cleared out by 5 or so people before I even got off of work. No starters.

Shame on me for attempting to support a LGS and preorder through them? Shame on my LGS? Looks to me like Destiny still has serious serious issues for new players. Also with certain individuals in the community just coming in and cleaning out an entire booster box, how on earth do they possibly expect their local community to expand?

My store was able to fill all preorders, hold a tournament with packs for prize support (11 people on a Thursday), sell a couple boxes worth of individual boosters and still have 5 boxes left. All on release day no less.

I feel bad for those that suffered shortages yesterday, but I wonder how much of it is individual stores and the distributors and how much is actually product shortage. We are adding players and still have product for the shelf after suffering a severe lack of product through Awakenings.

I hope things turn around in your area too.

There aren't supply issues but distribution issues. Some stores in some areas for whatever reason can't get their distributors to supply them. Other places are swimming in product.

My feeling is some distributors are holding onto them to see if the prices go way up again so they can sell them through other channels. Happens a lot with some of the magic products. Once they figure out they won't be selling them for $150 a box and need to unload what they have, the LGS will get to buy them, assuming they even want to.

It's hard, for sure. I'm someone who buys a lot of this stuff (like, several boxes per wave) and there's not much that can be done to make there be more stock. To build a decent deck, you need to open a lot of packs because the elite versions of characters are just usually better, and singles are still usually a rip-off, given that nothing is really that rare in this game. For $30 I'll take my chances with ten boosters and hope I pull that Palpatine or something I can use to trade for him.

When I first started the game, there was one store in the neighboring town that had a couple boxes but only allowed people to buy 6 packs per person per day. Their stock lasted quite a while! I used that to get a few mediocre decks that I could use to play the game. I couldn't win tournaments or anything, but it was great for casual play with my friends.

Like @Starbane , my local stores were all fine, but I do think that it would be nice if there was a way for stores to set aside just a couple packs for new players. Just set aside a "new player package" of 6 packs and one each of the core sets. That's all you usually need to get started. Sadly, there's just no way to make sure people actually are new players, and there's a whole can of worms opened with regards to customer loyalty, and rewarding those who've played the game longer.

It's infuriating, but I always shop at the local stores. I've still NEVER bought a single FFG game online, this, X-Wing, Imperial Assault, etc.

Save the LGS! Save the dream!

Fixed a minor misspelling

I think June is going to be a good month for this game. By this holiday season this forum will be filled with deck suggestions and why XYZ card is broken... all will be right in the world.

"for whatever reason". Hmmm... I wonder what that reason could possibly be? Rebel activity? Sharknado hitting ACD's distribution center?

I think the reason is rather simple: Some distributors got shorted more than others. But we can't possibly accept that FFG's still having problems around here, can we? Better to blame the middlemen - it's MM's fault for ordering so many, or the stores didn't preorder in the first 0.71 seconds so it's all their fault, or it's because of the distributors, "for whatever reason" - I have to call that a bit lazy, really. As creative as this place is at coming up with excuses for FFG I think you can do better.

Not even my powers can stop the inevitable cries for Nerf. It is a force stronger than death and taxes...

Distributors hoarding cases is very common in magic. I wouldn't be surprised if that is what is happening here with certain areas, i.e. distributors, not having stock available for LGS. FFG's mistakes are plenty and have been beaten down like a dead horse over and over again.

Oh, that's more like it! Zero-evidence conspiracy theories, I like it!

So is there any actual evidence that this is happening?

They need to nerf "The Force is Strong" and "Jedi Robes." Those cards are just taking over the meta and now I can't win anymore. Please nerf, FFG!!!

Other than it is a common practice and current behavior of the distributors indicate that is taking place now, not really. It's not something they generally advertise. Make of it what you will.

If you want to see people hoarding product watch alpha investments on YouTube. I was in a card store May 4th that specializes in sports cards. They got into Destiny late with awakenings and they still got 20 boxes and that was ordering after the pre-release.

On SoR day the worker from the sports section and I were talking. He even mentioned how distributors hold sports card boxes to see if players have a big splash to increase the cost of sealed product. I then went to my lgs where I was told product was allocated and I could only get 1 box. Once I told them how much I wanted to buy he got on the phone with his distributor and I walked away with what I wanted.

I don't know what was said from that distributor but it must have been good news for my lgs to sell me more. Blame FFG for not making enough product but I think the middle man needs a bit of that blame as well.

Sadly distributors hoarding collectables is a common practice, be it collectable cards, limited scotch or collector edition video games. Why whole sale a box of Destiny at $70-$80 when they can ebay it for $200 themselves. Even if they don't retail it themselves they can always increase the wholesale price. So if you see a store selling something higher than MSRP, it is possible they had to pay over normal wholesale price. The real problem here was the big sell out of Awakenings which tip everyone off to hoarding of any more releases of Destiny. The hoarding going on now and localized shortages is rather predictable sadly.

The good news is few boxes are being sold on ebay. SoR isn't selling as well as Awakening has, so that wave two should be rather plentiful now that everyone knows there won't be huge profits.

My stores got way more stock than with awakenings. My main store got like 3 boxes in the first wave of awakenings and 4 in the second or something. Got 15 boxes of SoR which was enough for everyone that asked for a box ahead of time plus quite a few extra. Other main store in town apparently got at least double that

Are you kidding?

a big problem is how much product you need to buy to even have basic playable decks.

Fifteen bucks and 10 commons are all you need to have a "basic playable deck," and even then you'd be hard pressed to find somebody uptight enough to turn away players for not having the 10 commons. The amount of product required to play this game is actually quite negligible.

If it is your intention to be competitive at store championship level tournaments and above then you will have to spend some coin. However, this is pretty much par for the course with the ccg model. If you want to treat it like a beer and pretzel game you can spend far less.

No way! I traded two Darth Vaders for one Jedi Robes. It's just completely taken over the meta at my local store. I got lucky and found The Force is Strong for $50 on eBay. Now my list is unstoppable!

I would literally donate 10 commons to anybody who asked! I went nuts buying this stuff (still no Obi Wan or Chewbacca, before you ask) and now there's 54 different cards from SoR that I have four or more copies of, not to mention my Awakenings duplicates.
