Hey guys,
the german shop NERD-X offers t3mm MDF terrain which can be easily used as the base for 3D terrain:

Really solid idea. My plan is to just trace the terrain onto MDF and cut it out with a jigsaw. I don't think anyone will care for casual games if the size/shape is SLIGHTLY off. If I'm careful when building the terrain, I can leave space for the actual trays.
You have just to do the terrain smaller than game template. And remove when units ocuppy.
Need someone in the US to do those now. Great idea

Don't even need to do that.
I've managed to make all my 3d terrain the exact same footprint, and easily able to fit the max number of trays.
I guess I'm not sure why people so make 3D terrain aren't making ornate terrain that just happens to have a flat space that fits the maximum number of trays that terrain can hold?
A "forest" with a decent number of trees but a clear flat place for the X trays it can fit.

That's literally what I plan on doing. My terrain will have flat spots for the trays. Shouldn't be too hard to do.
In RWMG you dont need to create terrain where the Trays fit in. Due to 81.2. It's OK to put only 1 symbolic miniature in the terrain the rest is set aside.

Nah, but it's cool.

Both have their benefits.
-Putting the whole unit in terrain looks pretty cool.
-Building intricate and unique terrain looks dramatic.
It's possible to do both, (there's some pretty great examples in the painting and modeling section) but leaving space for 4-6 trays can reall limits the flexibility you have in what you build.
Edited by eilifI like to take the figures out of the tray and position them thematically when I use some of my old terrain.

The problem is, the Stone Terrace/Forest template is just barely larger than the maximum 6 trays that can occupy it. There isn't room to put any trees on a Forest template unless you make them removable. Which is what I've done. I'd wanted to put something on top of the Stone Terrace as well but again, there's no room.
The Swamp/Crumbling Wall templates are quite larger than the 2 trays they allow, so there's plenty of room to put stuff on them and still have room for trays.

Make the terrace flat topped, and put the trees in the corners of the template lengthwise. My terrace fits six.

You know we need to see some inspiring terrain pictures now right?

I went with that approach too, but I had thought to put some decoration up there but there's no room after giving it a little bit of a slope. From my terrain post over in the modelling subforum:
As for the forest, here's what you have to work with if you leave room for 6 trays:
I struggled over what size tree would have a base/trunk small enough to fit on those edges but not be too small in scale compared to the miniatures. I eventually went with these two trees, loosely placed on top of the template, although I had wanted them to be fixed. If you have 5 or less trays there's room to leave one tree:
Very nice!
Are those GW trees?
Mine works pretty well. It doesn't have to be pretty at max capacity, just has to work.
As for the forest, just make the trees removable for occupancy, or do the classic token under the terrain and pull it off when a big formation enters.
In my games, terrain isn't occupied all that much. It tends to get you killed anyway.

Ah! I saw this in the Facebook group! Outstanding piece of terrain!

...I think that could be arranged.
Anyone know where to find the files to 3d print these yet? We have a 3D printer of our own now and I haven't seen a source for them yet.
I 2nd the request for source code to 3d print the terrain.
