So many things are wrong.

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This isn't a rules question as much as a rules lament. Played at the FLGS tonight and ths table next to mine had some serious rules faux pas. Here are just a few.

Trying to drop two bombs with Miranda.

Trying to regain two shields by shorting both TLT shots.

Not being allowed to K turn over an asteroid. Your ship stops at the edge of the rock just like overlapping a ship.

None of these deal with the latest expansion.

FFG provides a fairly well written Rules Reference Guide and a comprehensive (sort of) FAQ and errata list. Why don't people use them?

Ok, rant over. Go back to your regularly scheduled games.

Did you attempt to point out the errors? I suppose it's a bit tricky when it's not your game. I hope it wasn't a tourney.

Aw man, it's always painful to watch those occur.

Regardless of the setting, as a fellow player I feel obligated to step in and point out such glaring errors; even in a tourney setting. It's not fair for anyone involved to be playing competitively and dealing with such errors.

RRG page 14.

• If a ship moves through or overlaps an obstacle while executing a Koiogran turn, Segnors Loop left, or Segnors Loop right maneuver, it still rotates 180º when placed.

• If a ship moves through or overlaps an obstacle while executing a Talon Roll left or Talon Roll right maneuver, it still rotates 90º when placed.

So it sounds like they had this one right, and you didn't.

I think what Stoneface was trying to point out was what they did wrong was stopping at the edge of the obstacle the same way as overlapping a ship.

Nope. They weren't rotating the ship! They were stopping at the edge of the rock. Just like if you hit a ship.

Fortunately, one of the guys asked. There was another player there who refs tournaments at another store that straightened them out.

Fortunately it was a casual game. No feathers were ruffled during the explanations.

Sorry I misunderstood the OP.

A while back, I played a guy who tried to barrel roll twice to get a shot on me. I told him you couldn't and he got kind of mad and called over the TO. The TO told him the same, but the rest of the game was uncomfortable. I ended up sharing some extra alt art upgrades with him, but he was still a liitle ticked at me.

Not a problem. I said before I shouldn't be allowed to get online after 10:00 PM. :D

I re-read my op and could have phrased that better.

Well this one don't even need the rules... you just read the card... "Once per round". A case could be argued that you gain or lose the die for the two TLT attacks, but bending it so it make you gain or loose two shields is a really hard bend of what is written...

I think part of the problem is people teaching other people without using the rule book from the start. There was a game we played in grade school called Telephone or Operator or something like that. The teacher would give a word or phrase to one student and that student would say it to the next and it was passed down the line. What the last student heard usually bore little resemblance to what the teacher said.

If a player learns something the wrong way it becomes a matter of GIGO. Garbage In-Gospel Out when it gets passed along. It becomes a matter of "This is how I've always played it".

Another cause of GIGO is speed reading cards. Sometimes a player will miss a key word in an upgrade card. Take Palpatine for example. Before the nerf if you missed the word "friendly" on his card, it made him way too strong. Think about that! Being able to change any die once per round.

Another part of the problem is people knowing something is being done the wrong way and letting it slide without comment during smaller tournaments.

People take a casual attitude on their play style and when you get to a bigger event, like a store championship, they are agumentative and angry when people try to enforce the rules.

You're right. There's nothing like finding out Youve been playing the game wrong in the middle of a tournament! Anger, embarrassment and frustration all in one shot!

I had a guy at a Regional in the 4-0 bracket drop an ion bomb with Miranda, then SLAM in front of my entire squad to try and drop a Conner Net. He was pretty down when I told him he'd put himself in an awful position for no reason at all.

Makes you wonder if any of those previous 4 wins were assisted by double bombings.

So... you rewarded crappy behaviour with rewards, is that what you're telling us? Don't ever have kids man. :P

Ouch. My son and I were wiping the local lists off the tables in that little store.... I was doing it with a dual Punisher list, so guess I felt a little sorry for them...

I applaud your good will AND winning with two punishers. :) Nothing is worse than a guy not only pointing out a wrong play but insinuating the player was foolish for thinking it worked that way. Less arrogance and more patience will go a long way. Good on you mate.

I've played some casual games where people do double boosts and get initiative rules wrong. I hate pointing that stuff out because you it may push people away from the game. But little stuff like that makes a big difference.

If people are going to leave a game because somebody points out they were playing it incorrectly (i.e. breaking basic rules) then they probably shouldn't be playing it in the first place.

If they genuinely want to play this game, they should welcome people helping to correct their misunderstanding of the rules so they can improve as a player.
