IGV-55 Gozanti conversion.

By WoofMcMoose, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Just received my second Gozanti and planning to undertake a bit of modification after seeing the IGV-55 'listener ship' variant (Wiki). Looks like the forward wing section is chopped to continue the angle of the aft section which should be straightforward to do. Extra engines may be trickier due to size difference. Comms junk up top should be an easy kitbash.

Nervous about starting without more reference pics so if anyone knows where I could find more that would be greatly appreciated.

Will update this thread as build progresses.

Looking forward to seeing progress on this, but can't help much with pics other than those in the "Rebels" thread...as for the extra engines, there was a thread about an early conversion of the Gozanti model to a regular freighter where the builder fabricated new engines [or someone made them for him] - may be worth trying to track it down ;)

I was originally going to do a freighter conversion to my 3rd Goz, but with the C-Roc coming I may change to this 55 design instead...

So having found a few more reference pics there are potentially a couple of issues that are trickier than I thought.

Basic plan was to cut along the present wing line and use some of the cut away to make the extension for the additional engines.

However, closer inspection of the front of the wing shows it distinctly protrudes out from under the 'cheek' extensions, whereas if you follow the wing angle of the FFG Gozanti model the cut will end up along the edge of the 'cheek'. The reason for this is that the FFG 'cheeks' extend approximately half way out over the standard Gozanti wing, whereas the Rebels CGI model has significantly smaller 'cheeks':

So options are to cut along the existing wing angle, which is easiest but will hide the front of the wing under the cheeks, or to cut the whole wing at a more shallow angle. I will probably go for the former option. The pic below shows with masking tape the two possible cut lines. I suppose I could re-shape the 'cheeks' but that would be significantly more work than I want to undertake.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with the wings and extra set of engines. The defining feature of this ship is the sensors and dishes on the top. If you take your time and get that right, people won't even notice the lack of engines unless you point it out.

How about a middle-ground approach, maybe not accurate, but unless we get a proper Wiki gallery for the ship with the art drawings you're unlikely to do better than working from screen-grabs...

...keep the leading edge 'kink', but hopefully significantly reduced so far less noticeable - red line below ???

Also, the engine 'rebuild' thread I was thinking of - not sure if AWeber could be of any help:
