Okay, I have been patient, but its May the Fourth, where is my spoilage!

By Hrathen, in Star Wars: Armada

I don't know how many times I have gotten on the FFG website today, just knowing I was going to get something cool for Armada posted. It's May the Fourth for Pete's sake. The only reason we haven't gotten any spoilers a week or two earlier is because they wanted to wait for this special day.

But the Day is here. I am done waiting. And a Destiny article doesn't count. I don't play CCGs.

Information? Spoilers? Excitement? A Jedi craves not these things.

Which is good because you wont be getting it.

Yea, FFG's new prized baby is Destiny. It's already drawn quite a few X-Wing and Armada regulars away, at least in my local scene.

I'm sure FFG likes this, as I'd imagine CCGs have got to be much, much cheaper to produce (especially when you have so much Star Wars art already commissioned from years of other games in the universe), and the fans typically spend a lot more per wave than minis players since they are chasing things and not always buying what they want.

I have a hard time understanding how placing a card is as much fun as moving an Imperial Star Destroyer...

Yeah. I wish we had a preview today. =(

I'm not a Jedi, I'm an officer in the Imperial Navy, *********. And I want to know how Sloane will help make TIEs great (not great again, they really weren't ever great to begin with, just good.)

Well why didnt you say so in the first place?

Previews are just in front of the dais where the Hutt is holding court. Hurry along now.

I'll dispatch a probe droid presently. However, my tea is up here on the bridge of my ship, as are the targeting computers for the turbolasers, so smelly old Jabba can choke on a chain.

You'd think as an American my English grammar would be better

I was expecting a Super Star Destroyer sneak peek. You failed me again, FFG.

Wont let me quote the edit but as a product of the american educational system I would think the opposite.

Mixed bag just doesn't quite say it.

It's probably not, even for most folks who like Destiny. What keeps CCGs going is that they provide an extended satisfaction of buying, chasing, opening, and collecting. People tend to enjoy thinking about their vacations/hobbies more than actually experiencing those vacations/hobbies. Reading about fishing spots, looking at maps of the lake, thinking about the smell of early morning air and all the fish you might catch, putting new line on your reel, filling the tackle box with a few new lures, watching some fishing shows ... people spend far more time on these activities than actually fishing, and research suggests people enjoy that thought-filled prep-step as much or more than actual fishing.

CCGs are--for some people--very fun to chase and collect and organize into binders and day-dream about deck builds. For some, this is undoubtedly more fun than the actual gameplay of the CCG. I always enjoyed deck-building in Magic, but I never had very much fun actually playing the game itself, especially playing the same decks against each other more than a couple of times.

So, it's fair to say some people like CCGs despite the game itself. Surely some people actually enjoy the game play and depth of a CCG itself, and some CCGs are better than others at providing fun, stimulating, and rewarding gaming experiences, but it is certainly the case that some people like CCGs because of the between-game stuff, namely the collecting and deck-building. Just compre how popular Destiny is to how popular the LCG never was: certainly some people like the blind-purchase collecting, to some degree.

I'm struggling to remember when a 4th May did bring some form of announcement. Our overlords do not care about us...

Except they throw in a specialized dice. XD I would think that drives up the cost a bit more than regular CCGs. (I don't know any that have those kinda dice but I don't know too many CCGs)

ALSO last May the Fourth week we got something GRAND. A Nelson Meltdown at the announcement of flotillas (may 6th!)

Good point about the special die. I'd still assume it's much cheaper than making miniatures, since there is presumably just a single mold for all the dice and the packaging for each expansion can be uniform. A new X-Wing ship requires a new mold for each part, assembly, and unique packaging. Also, I'd suspect shipping is cheaper, since I think you can get more Destiny boosters into a box than X-Wing or Armada blisters. I'm obviously not privy to the details of the manufacturing and shipping, but I'd guess Destiny has much lower costs.

Of course, Destiny also has the perk of a nearly full universe to explore, with all three trilogies being drawn from for content. In addition, they can do people, places, things, events, and actions. X-Wing, on the other hand, has mined pretty deeply into the realm of starfighters used during the Galactic Civil War and New Trilogy. Granted, with Rebels and new movies and new comics there will always be a flow of new potential ships, but Destiny has near-limitless content to explore while X-Wing is sort of waiting with held breath for new and interesting ships to still be released, and with each new wave of ships forum reception seems increasingy underwhelming with folks who buy 100pts of every ship as it comes out seeming to be quite rare exceptions, with more people now than in earlier waves opting to skip picking up ships entirely (at least anecdotally and personally).

So, I dunno, if I was FFG I'd be very interested in getting my X-Wing customer base to shift over to Destiny.

FFG have just shown off a new big box and 3 expansions as well as expansion news about other SW games, hopefully there is still time for any announcements about Armada this Worlds.

Or even just a tiny article about the Quasar/Hammerheads

I seriously have no hopes in that department. FFG has disappointed me on too many occasions article wise.
