Random Star Wars Fan Stuff

By subtrendy, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

In honor of May 4th, I thought it might be neat to make a thread for random Star Wars geekdom for IA players that doesn't necessarily have to do with IA.

Speaking of which, how many of you might I know from The Cantina forums?

Also, in regards to my book talk with @VadersMarchKazoo on the "Friday" thread:

Keep reading, Aftermath and the 1st half of life debt are OK, but the second half of Life Debt is a page turner and you'll want to start Empires End asap. At least that was my experience.

Good to know!

I'll definitely have to finish the whole Aftermath trilogy soon. Has anyone here read Thrawn or Lost Stars? Read those two over the past week or so, both really impressed me!

Another May the 4th and man how times have changed. When I first became a Star Wars fan, I had no idea that this is the direction and size that the franchise would eventually take on. It's had some ups and downs in the past, but now in the Disney era, it looks like it's up all day.

Collectibles, games, etc have all blown up in recent years. There was a time just after ROTS that people thought Star Wars would die out without a movie in sight and slumping toy sales, but Star Wars beat that hurdle.

Great time to be a fan. Happy May the 4th! May the 4th be with you.

I've read Lost Stars but not Thrawn. It's on the shelf with a shinny new book cover. With the exception of Thrawn, I've read all of the new cannon novels and Lost Stars which is technically a young reader. I think that's why Lost Stars impressed me so much because it wasn't supposed to be a full novel. Plus, when I read lost stars, my wife and I were working our way through the OT, and it just happened to line up exactly at the pace that I read the book (since the book covers the entire OT era), and it was totally coincidental!

Yeah, Lost Stars is definitely a lower reading level, but I think it still really manages to tell a good story. Neat about how it lined up!

I grew up back in the day with Star Wars, but then really didn't have much interest for most of the next 25 years, including through the prequels. But I've always been a hardcore tabletop and board gamer, although mainly focusing on historicals in my adult life. I liked the look of the FFG games, but wasn't tempted.

Then a couple of years back my (then) 7 yr old said he'd played a game called Imperial Assault, and would I like to play it with him - it's like a fathers gaming fantasy come to life! That hook got me into x wing as well, and from there I managed to get my entire gaming group into Descent.

Also along the way I've dived fully into the whole EU and other storylines - I've listened to 25+ Star Wars audiobooks in the past 18 months whilst painting IA minis, really adding to my passion for Star Wars - which I guess was always there, just long buried.

So I have FFG, and IA, to thank for this - introducing my son to gaming, which has been a great bonding experience, My group to Descent, which has brought back so many memories of our younger rpg days, and me to the wider Star Wars universe - taking me back to my childhood.

It's not always an easy journey - the frustrating struggles over supply and release dates aren't easy to explain to a kid who sees a 6 month wait for something new as a lifetime - but ultimately, the FFG Star Wars games really have been a great experience for me.

(I really must photos of the custom figures I've painted up! )

If you have any doubts over Lost Stars, listen to it as an audiobook - whilst the first hour or so is a little annoying as the main characters are kids, the later stuff, complete with full music and sound effects, are excellent.

Ooh, that sounds excellent!

And we'd love to see your painted figures! (I've got to put mine up eventually, too)

I clearly remember the first time i was able to borrow the OT from a friend of mine. It was on VHS of course.

My mother saw it and she said:

My son we need to watch it toogether coz i like it as well and you will like it I am sure

I was 13 years old.

If i remember well i red all 5 thrawn books. Was an ammazing experience.

My special favorit atm is the Allegiance by Timothy Zahn

Have you read the new Thrawn novel? It's also by Zahn, and it's pretty good! Sort of a Sherlock and Watson v Moriarty in space type of thing.

From what I've seen of Thrawn on Rebels. He is definitely the Moriarty of the SW universe.

Sub- you should check out the latest Resistance Radio podcast. They teamed up with the guys from Jodo Cast to do a full Thrawn novel review. I haven't listened to it because I don't want any spoilers.

While we are reminiscing, I was in 3rd grade when ROTJ came out. I remember my mom got tickets to the opening day show for a bunch of my friends. We got to leave school a little early to catch it - it was fantastic.

Now, both of my kids are big Star Wars fans, and we got tickets to Force Awakens and Rogue One on opening day (they are already asking if I've preordered for Last Jedi ;). It's cool to be able to replicate those early childhood memories with your own kids.

Relating it to IA, since we bought it in January this game has been such a great family activity for us. It's nice to have something everyone is excited about and doesn't involve video games (not that video games are bad - just it's nice to have alternatives).

Return of the Jedi was the first movie I can remember seeing in the theater. It was awesome. I had nightmares about the Rancor for a long time. This only made me like it even more, and insist on getting the original Kenner Rancor. But let's face it, despite me loving it, which I think I always will, ROTJ was not a great film, objectively speaking. My memories of seeing ESB and ANH for the first time, even though it was on a small screen, were much more intuitive of quality and artistic expression, even if I was too young to understand those concepts.

I was a senior in high school when Episode 1 came out. A bunch of us got tickets early, for the "good" movie theater an hour away, and skipped school to see it. My girlfriend at the time was living with her grandparents and I didn't know if they'd let her cut school with us. Her gramma said "Oh, my friends I did the same thing to see Gone With the Wind ." Some things never change. We went to see it. Miraculously, there were tickets still available for sale for a showing that was starting like 10 minutes after we got out of the theater. We saw it again. We went to Pizza Hut and sat around talking about the movie and we all slowly came down off the high of finally seeing a new Star Wars movie and no one wanted to be the first one to say it, but suddenly we all agreed that the movie was terrible. I haven't seen any prequels since they left theaters.

The Force Awakens was a bit of a let down, but at least it fit the universe, unlike all the prequels. Ce n'est pas magnifique, mais c'est la Guerre des Étoiles . Besides you had to cut them some slack for the misfortune of following Mad Max: Fury Road.

You win some, you lose some.

The there was Rogue One. Oh my gosh. I can't even talk about it. It would take a doctoral dissertation on film history to articulate how good that movie was. Finally. A piece of real cinematic art bearing the Star Wars name, after so many years of waiting.

10000x this. Rogue One was so incredibly done, they have their work cut out for episode 8!! The battle scenes were awesome, felt just like Empire - yet still fresh. The story had dark moments (for Star Wars), they gave us some "red meat" with the Hallway Scene. The characters were interesting and diverse. Finally, the ending - I loved the way they ended the film, which I am sure was not an easy decision for Disney.
