For some reason this reminds me of a dumb thought I had as a child. I always thought they should put giant lightsabers instead of laser cannons on X-wings, because obviously lightsabers are better than lasers.

Ships, unlike people, have a nasty tendency to explode and throw shrapnel everywhere when they die. Nevermind that you now have to ram enemy fighters. And then die as you crash into their wreckage, because they're right in front of you when they stop moving.

Sure. And the cool thing about being a kid is that you're not constrained by such thoughts.
As a kid I thought they were shooting blasts out of their lightsabers in Episode 1 whenever they would deflect shots from the droids.
