How to make 3 day events 2 day

By Storgar, in X-Wing

The 3 day events can pose a problem for many in the extra cost and time involved.

So here we are talking about system opens, nationals, Euro and Worlds where you could be looking at 300-500 players.

So the idea would be to make them playable in 2 days but not go on into late in the night if possible. I would say 8 games in a day are the max to get a reasonable finish time with some food breaks in the day.

So Day 1 - 6 rounds of swiss to make a 128 player cut, followed by a 2 round of swiss to make a 64 player cut.

Day 2 - 2 rounds of swiss to make 32 then knockout.

8 matches day 1 followed by 7 matches day 2 for the finalists.

Is this viable / preferable?

Whats your thoughts?

I don't know the solution, but I do know these three day events are a no go for certain professionals. Maybe giant pods is best?

I'm pretty sure the reason they do day 1 and day 2 as it is now is because of the size of the venue. Allows them to get as many players playing while still keeping things reasonable space wise.

Day 1: Requires 10 hours (9.666) of PLAY time. Not between rounds, not breaking for food, not even moving between tables or sorting out the next match and then the top 64 cut. If you add lets say.. 2 hours for food throughout the day and ALL the time between rounds, moving tables etc... you have a 12 hour day on the assumption you can start at 9am, you should be down around 10pm (because nothing ever goes smoothly). I'll be honest, by the end of a day like that, I have no idea if I'd want to get to the following 8 hours of play ( rounds on day 2 as well). Assuming you start on time, every game finishes ideally before time, otherwise the game takes longer to resolve.

Using that model Day one would be at the very least a 12 hour day at around 10 hours playing time, 1.5 hours eating time and around half hour (at the very least) of set up between round times, calculating opponents etc. And that's only if the tournament software didn't decide to have a hissy fit at the number of players it was catering for.

Day two probably wouldn't be any better.

Another option is to ban anyone who turns up with a Scum list, that'll cut the numbers down to manageable.

I don't think it's possible to do an event with 500 people where all of them play 6 games in one day. Plus as others pointed out, 12 hours is really the minimum amount of time it would take.

If 500 people show up to a single event, that event is a smashing success, so I don't see any reason why the format should be changed. Sure some people can't make it, but when you're pushing the limits of the location due to the number of people there's only so much you can do.

Easiest way is to have two qualifying pools, one on Friday and one on Saturday and have a cut from each play Sunday.

That way you cater to both groups, those who can only make a weekend event and have no interest in the wider convention/expo and those who don't want to spend the whole weekend playing and would like to see the expo.

As it stands, I'm probably only going to play Friday of Euros even if I make the cut so I can spend time at the Expo. Maybe play a side event on Sunday.

80pt games, 55 minute time limit.

Tatooine Open in Madrid went as smoothly as you can hope for with only 1 hiccup with pairings and 7 rounds of Swiss still took us from about 9 AM to 10 PM.
