My punishers need some help

By Muppetfluffer, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I need something that helps the punishers recieving TL/Focus for round 1-2 so they can shoot torps with maximum modification.

Dont go unpjunished (100)

Cutlass Squadron Pilot (26) - TIE Punisher
Extra Munitions (2), Plasma Torpedoes (3), Guidance Chips (0)

Academy Pilot (12) - TIE Fighter

I'm in love with support shuttles atm, especially now that Palp was nurfed. Works with lambda or epsilon. Advanced sensors allows you to take an action before movement. Use fleet officer to hand out 2 focus, or general Hux to hand out 3 if you have the points for him. Either one stresses you. Then perform your green maneuver, and give someone a target lock with system officer. I flew this in the lambda (fleet officer), 2 ties for blockers, and death fire with em, plasmas, and proximity mines. Was a pretty fun list, since then I've upgraded to the epsilon shuttle and Hux, supporting 3 strikers. You can use this build in a bomber with the tie shuttle title as well. You'll lose advanced sensors so be careful how you fly, but it's cheaper then an actual shuttle. Good luck ;)

To be honest you don't really have the points for it in your list. Punishers are too expensive to only put 2 ordinance on. Go with bombers if you want your current setup. Then a lambda with the build suggested above you can get target lock, focus on both your ordinance as well as giving a tie fighter fanatical devotion (or the lambda).

Edit; a cheaper version would be a classic tie shuttle with fleet and systems officer

Was actually gonna suggest using bombers rather then punishers, but I just recently made a quad bomber list with 3 torp ships and a tie shuttle. It got bad reviews lol But ya, Maybe 2 bombers, a support shuttle and then some other ship? 2 ties for blocking, or if you can squeeze the points, a cheap ace like omega?

Use Homing Missiles, add Fleet officer on a TIE Shuttle. Or give up on Guidance Chips and use LRS so you don't rely on synergy.

"My punishers need some help," sounds like the start of a Punisher Fix thread. My Punisher is in the box of shame with the Scum Ships I bought to get upgrade cards.

You could fly an Upsilon with Weapons Engineer and Targeting Synchronizer, or a pair of TIE/fo or TIE/sf with Targeting Synchronizer.

Yes, this is true of everyone's TIE punisher! It was a DOA ship, unfortunately and a sign (one of many!) that the designers are a bit out to lunch when it comes to fully understanding the nuances of this game, unfortunately. But I digress!

Here's a way to at least get some bang for your TIE punisher buck. I won't lie, its still not hugely competitive, but at least it can do something:

Zeta Specialist w/ FCS, Spec Ops training & targeting synchronizer = 28

Cutlass pilot w/ homing missile, extra munitions & LRS = 28

Cutlass pilot w/ proton torp, extra munitions & GC = 27

Imperial Trainee w/ adaptive ailerons = 17

100

So to get this list to work, you want to use the trainee either as a blocker (against stuff that can boost barrel roll or gain lots of defensive actions like focus+evade) or otherwise use it as a flanker. Targeting Synchronizer makes the list work. Zeta Specialist shoots first and gets his TL from FCS. Then Proton Cutlass can use that to fire his torp.

You have long range sensors, guidance chips, Operations specialist, Hux, Fleet officer, systems officer, targeting synchronizer, stridan, jendon, redline, and so on. Not sure what you're looking for.... It is all there already.

Two words: Special Forces. Much better than two academy pilots.

Assuming you can move into range of your opponent in the round, you would:

  1. TIE Punishers move first. BOTH OF THEM FOCUS.
  2. SF TIE moves. His/her action is to use Squad Leader to allow one of them to perform a free action. They get a Target Lock.
  3. SF TIE then attacks the ship your TIE Punisher WITHOUT the Target Lock wants to attack. Through Fire Control System (FCS), the SF TIE gets a target lock.
  4. Punisher 1 attacks their target with a torpedo or missile, and still has a focus token. Also with FCS, they get a free TL should they survive.
  5. Punisher 2 attacks, spending the SF TIE Target Lock, using Targeting Synchronizer, and has a focus token to spend.

There is flexibility in that if only 1 target presents itself Round 1, then a single Punisher would focus, use the Squad Leader to get a TL, then spend the SF TIE TL to initiate the attack, leaving the Punisher with a focus token AND TL to spend for whatever munition they fired.

After that first round, since all of your ships have Fire Control System, at least one secondary weapon fired per round could have a FOCUS and TARGET LOCK to adjust the dice, with EVERY shot having a focus token lying around. Squad Leader and Targeting Synchronizer make your SF TIE a double TL generating ship, combined with your Phantoms getting 1 each free / round, they are free to focus.

Two Punishers as below. I changed the loadout to include Plasma Torpedoes because that's what you had in your initial setup.

Thx for all the great ideas and advice.

In my humble opinion 26pts for 9hitpoints and 2 pewpew is fairly nice (not super).

I started to look at x23-tracers and ended up with this...but the Tie SF solutions sure feels more viable ;)

A bit unrelated, but I do enjoy flying Deathrain quite a bit. I have had some small success with this build for him

Deathrain (38 total)

Enhanced Scopes (1)

Extra Munitions (2)

Proximity Mines (3)

Cluster Mines (4)

Lightweight frame (2)

I haven't settled on any support for him, but with the Lightweight frame the Punisher becomes surprisingly difficult to remove from the board.

Targeting Synchronizer is fun in conjunction with anything that doesn't require you to spend the lock (Homing Missiles, Ion Pulse Missiles, etc.).

Try it on Epsilon Ace (20 points with T.S.).

For future referece, this might be an option. Hihihihihihi!!!!!
