Is the range "up to three spaces away" considering the space occupied the monster as one. Or is it making it three spaces starting away from the monster?
Question about range. Specifically in the horror step.
Starting away from the monster. An investigator in the space adjacent to the monster would be considered one space away from the monster.
And don't forget that a door stops you from being considered in range! Monsters can't scare you if you can see them!

Try telling that to the monster under my bed...

And they are also so polite that every time they move through a door, they close the door behind them...

Hey... they may be hideous monsters from another dimension, but that doesn't mean they were raised in a barn!

True
I always imagine the lovely Star Spawn from a couple of scenarios passing through walls while chasing investigators and then stopping, looking backwards with horrified sight and sweat coming down their tentacles, and closing a door on a non-existing wall because mommy taught them to do so...
I still prefer the situation where monsters close the doors behind them, then the one where you have to keep track of it with door markers.
I always imagine every door automatically closes behind you. You know, just like in every horror film and video game.
