Recent Model Quality Is Slipping...

By terrymac94, in X-Wing

I still remember my 1st X-wing. Opening it new in box, and seeing how crooked the lasers cannons were (they pointed in 4 separate directions, and part of the problem was due to 2 of the wings being glued at awkward angles)

Oh how nervous I was re-bending them to be straight (anyone know if a career in miniatures physical therapy pays well? ).

Through years of purchases I've come across a handful of various ties having panels at awkward angles, and even more cases of x-wings (t-65's and t-70's) with skewed cannons. Maybe I'm a perfectionist, but still - I would continue to get these minis into proper shape without official criticism (as annoying and frustrating as it was to correct the models).

But lately I've noticed that the painting has also been getting sloppy. The most recent case of this was about a week ago when I finally picked up a copy of HTR.

- No bent lasers? Check.

- Ships not broken? check.

Fantastic. (Buy.)

(Package opened)

- Unnoticed ugly glob of black paint on the front of new Poe's windshield? Check.

- Scratch marks on his wing resulting in a small, but noticeable spray of orange on the pure black fuselage? Check.

- Loose satellite dish that slides out of it's holder on top of new Falcon? Check.

Why??? Why the slip in quality??

Has anyone else encountered this? And if so, does it bother you too?

My TIE Strikers have flappy wings (edited to add, this is awesome , in case it wasn't clear), just like the U-Wings, and the Upsilon shuttles. The TIE/fo have much more detail than the older TIE/ln - and the paint job on Sabine's TIE is much more complex than any imperial ones. The new Falcon also has finer details than the old one, and has a glowy engine.

No, I haven't noticed a slip in quality. Guess you were unlucky with those globs of paint.

Geeez people, whats with all the complaints lately?

The models look better than ever. Sure, a bad one squeaks through once in a while, but come'on.

agree with haslo. In fact, as far as I've seen, the quality of both the models and the paint work just keeps on getting better.

Don't agree? Put a TIE/sf next to a Wave 1 TIE, or a Protectorate next to a Y-Wing. There's a hell of a lot more detail.

So in response to endless whining on the forums, FFG has gone to the source and nerfed plastic?

Not whining, didn't know if other people had issues with some unlucky paint jobs.

But yes, I agree that the quality of the models and some of the paint jobs overall have been getting better (I really did like what they did with the sabine and special forces tie), with the exception of x-wing cannons, I know a lot of people who've found this disappointing.

Also didn't know if anyone else's new falcon dish was loose or not - the older model's dish clicked into place while this newer one doesn't seem to have the bumps to click into place.

There is always a margin of error in manufacturing and I would say that over all the minis have actually gotten a little higher in quality since Wave 1. Just last night I was regluing the solar panels on one of my TIE fighters and was really struck by how bad the original core set TIE looked next to the TIEs that I got in the Gozanti carrier. Sloppy paint job, wonky solar panels...

Of course there are always a few minor mistakes that slip through the production process. If you feel like they are too much you should contact FFG and send them pictures and proof of purchase. They are usually pretty good about replacing things that don't adhere to their quality standards.

There are paint errors on one each of my TIE/fos and Aces squints. I figure it happens.

Paint quality is the same to me. Some get smudged paint jobs, but that's why you examine them in the clamshell beforehand (sorry online orderers).

The only major change I've noticed is ships don't get lathered with black wash quite like they used to.

The ARC-170 is gorgeous. FFG have definitely improved the quality of the minis over the last few waves. I think the most disappointing one lately has been the Upsilon shuttle. Maybe because it's entirely black, but I feel the detail is lacking on that one. It looks and feels more like kids toy than a miniature (if that makes sense?).

I actually have a Y-wing that matches the card art. It was the first Y-wing I got. The newer one was better.

For me it is the pegs and bases. They are not fitting as well as they used to.

Arc is really glorious.

Another slightly disappointing recently is the Quadjumper. While the stripes have a nice weathering and execution; is the rest rather bland and I have seen several cases of really sloppy paintjobs, esp round the scavenger crane.

I had a spree of bad bases back in wave 6 and 7. Particularly wave 6 was notorious I believe and promted a factory change which lead to some incompatibilities between pre and post TFA core bases.

I never had problem with bad painting, but I got some deformed minis. Is there a way to unbend warped wings?

New/Old peg incompatibility was annoying until I magnetized almost all my ships.

I honestly hope we get new X-wings and Y-wings even though I already own four of each. Why? The old models were pretty crap compared to the new ones. I want to paint up some X-wings but the lack of detail is going to make a decent paint job pretty difficult relative to the newer models.

Disappointing to have flaws on your Black One but I think that was bad luck more than a trend.

Has anyone tried to, say, take a good picture of the obvious glitched paint jobs and sent to FFG for possible replacement?
