Perspective from a new player

Core sets will end up on Amazon and places like CoolStuffInc pretty early on as well I bet. They tend to be major distributors. I don't know how quick stuff ends up on Amazon now, but it seemed like it was pretty fast.

That being said, support your FLGS if you can.

As long as that kind of stuff is a point, sometimes quite big, in the story and not a straight line but overwrites everything else, I would not mind them that much. Not that stuff like Crab trying to use the Shadowlands made much sense to us but for Kisada seemed a lesser evil at the time and it did not become the norm for the Crab.

The Crab always eemed pretty pragmatic to me. If ripping of an ogre's arm and hitting some goblins with it works, they'd do it. And from there on it's a small step from using the shadow against itself.

I like that story of (forgotten the characters name) who's all big hilking mutated and he jumps down the kaiju wall crusing several foes whe he lands... and he's dissapointed that he survived.

Edit: Sorry was a costume contest prize. Though the Angry Crab is in reference to his forum handle.

There is an RPG school "Crab Pragmatist" who beat the Shadowlands hand-to-hand using any means necessary.

They are still the spoils of war, so to speak. You came, you saw, you conquered! And now you get things. But as others have pointed out, it's stuff that's exclusive to the victor, without upsetting the overall balance of the game like game-breaking promos would/could/have. Now, I also support store credit, but that's up to the individual store, not FFG. But think about it this way: blue ribbons and gold medals are useless trinkets, but they still mean you won. You show up to any tournament with those full-bleed cards or gorgeous play mats or fancy not-out-of-the-box-cardboard tokens, and people will know you did something cool.

Or you spent a lot of money on ebay buying them from the real winner. ;)

Now thats perfectly fine with the LCG model, with CCGs you get the ones who are good (possibly) because they can afford the best cards. They go on to win the prizes, wich they can then sell to get more money to buy more/better cards, and the cycle continues.

And god help you if they actually print powerfull promos: Dice masters avoided it first with the Black Widow promo technically being a reprint. But last time I checked the meta it was full of promo cards you could only get from tournaments. No fair!

But alt art, yeah I'd definatly like those.

You're thinking of Hida Kaiji, the Berserker Mutant.

Despite liking the Crab in general and this character, I'm rather peeved that he survived his later encounter with a young Battle Maiden. I won that tournament to kill him fair and square but he got better.

Yeah I really hate prize support for LCGs as well. Why do I care that I get a card that I already have? Or get tokens that I get when I purchase the core set? None of that is appealing to me and I will happily just sell off whatever I win... because I already have it! Why some people love having more cards that they already have is beyond me, but to each their own, I s'pose.

If I were to go to weekly tournaments, I'd much rather get store credit based on performance than stupid trinkets that I care nothing for. At least, if I get store credit, I may be able to play L5R LCG for free! ;)

I think getting store credits as prize will largely depend on attendance. Once the shop owner has enough to pay for the tournament kit, I guess they'd be okay with giving store credits as prizes.

This is something I'll have to discuss with our shop owner once he's convinced L5R LCG will be a hit. They've been pretty disappointed with the CCG outside of the Koteis we organized with them.

My local store runs free tournaments for every LCG expansion pack release (around monthly). You have to use a minimum number of cards from the new expansion pack. The winner gets the next expansion pack for free. It's quite popular and seems to work well. It also ensures that the competitive part of the community is getting together every month. There is weekly casual play on top of that.

Well what I was talking about was store credit instead of the crappy *** OP kits.

The thing is there are players that will want the alternate art cards, playmats, deckboxes and the like. I have no interest with the alternate art cards myself, and I have enough deckboxes since I bought a box of starters from Emperor edition. I even bought a few more starters from Gempukku and I can't see better deckboxes being offered here. They have enough room for around 100 sleeved cards and an honor counter. I'm sure I can squeeze a few Honored/Dishonored cards in it too.

I have quite a few playmats as well, because I won some playing DTR, AGoT, and I bought a couple from artists I like a lot.

Now, a nice Clan colors Dial is the only thing I could want from what we usually see in FFG's OP Kits.

But store credits, I'm all in favor of.
