Handmaid's Tale (tv - Hulu)

By heychadwick, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hi Guys,

Anyone else see this show? Just came out a few weeks ago. They are putting out one episode a week, unlike Netflix. We signed up for the free month to see it. It's pretty good. I saw the old movie back in the...90's? Lots of it filmed in my home state. I like this one, though. I also find it appropriate to current politics in the US.

I find it excellent. I just read the book, so being an adaptation is never the same as a book I find myself getting annoyed at some of the changes, other parts benefit from being a visual adaptation and are more impactful than the book. (Looking at you protest scene!)

I....just...can't like that post. Too....icky.

I've watched the first 2 episodes and enjoyed them despite the creepiness. I'll catch up via PVR because it's on Bravo in Canada and I'm busy watching Suits on Netflix.

There are too many good shows right now!

Oh man. What an uncomfortable show. Especially in light of recent elections.

Going to start loudly whispering this in crowds.

I know! I keep wanting to make comments about today's politics, but......want to keep the forum free from all that.

Saem. That's why NationStates (join Kuiper!) exists!

I have the problem one encounters when watching something based on a book (especially one read recently) I keep going "That's not in the book!" and taking issue with the casting (Commander, Nick, and Serena Joy both too young). I think I'd be enjoying it more if I hadn't read it. That said, I am enjoying it.

I fully understand that. I didn't read it, but I saw the older movie a long time ago. That movie was filmed in my state and I recognize a lot of places in the movie, which was neat. I don't really remember what happens and with it being a TV show, it's a bit different. I like it, though. Glad I don't recall too much.

It may not have come up yet, but can someone tell me if this has been retained from the novel: I recall reading that somewhere in the background there was a rebel group composed of Baptists opposing the government. I appreciated this as a way of not condemning religion or religious conservatism outright.

In the book Gilead was fighting baptist rebels. (Also killing Catholics who didn't convert).
