New Dark Heresy Designer Diary: Ascended Careers

By FFG Ross Watson, in Dark Heresy

This was nice. I already have players salivating over the prospect of the Ascended careers and enemies. With the other preview and the d6 podcast you've really whetted my appetite.

I'd love to see more on the Desperado class. Is it an upgrade for us gunslingers/gun based assassins? I also can't wait to see the Vindicare assassin path.

Looking forward to this so much. So very much. Fortunately, my new friend has taught me to bridge the gap between then and now, and all it cost me was a favour or two....

*cough*

Anyhow, it just occured to me that being psychic is a big part of some Inquistitors' hand of cards, and very much not a part of others'. Has anything been revealed about how that is being handled? I'm thinking it might have something to do with the mutually-exclusive career abilities that were mentioned in the interview.

I'm going to guess that most of these are straight one-to-one replacements

  • Adept > Sage
  • Arbites > Judge
  • Assassin > Death Cult Assassin
  • Cleric > Heriophant
  • Guardsman > Storm Trooper
  • Psyker > Primaris
  • Scum > Desperado
  • Tech Priest > Magos
  • Battle Sister > Crusader

That leaves Vindicare, which is probably another track for Assassin, and Interrogator/Inquisitor which we know is accessible to everyone but Tech Priest.

Depending on whether these new careers have multiple progression paths, the extra careers may simply be these progression paths as seperate careers instead.

I'm not sure exactly how they are equivalent though. A storm trooper and vindicare assassin aren't very equal.

Hellebore

That's just awesome. :)

My guesses match yours, though the last might be wrong. On GW's site, they have a Crusader listed as an Inquisitorial Henchman with the fallowing model for said Crusader:

and, apparently in the Witchhunter army, they seem to be a close assault specialist of some sort though, this being for the wargame, there's not other real information on them other then this model (and anouther) and what they're armed with. FFG could have made them into the ascended Sororitas but they could have gone other routs with them as well...

I have a couple of those Crusader models in my Witch-hunters army actually. They're close combat specialists in carapace armor armed with power swords and suppression shields (a shield with an integral rosarius-style force field). Really tough on the tabletop when paired with a similarly equiped Inquisitor.

Given that Inquisitors and Interrogators are going to be fairly well open to several careers feeding into them it is reasonable to figure (and hope) that some of the other Ascended Careers are somewhat flexable in what qualifies. Obviously a scum is not becoming a Judge, nor is a Guardsman becoming a Magos, but I could see the Crusader being a possible outgrowth of Guardsmen, Sororitas, militant-minded Arbitrators, a "damaged" Psykana Templar or what have you. Likewise, I am guessing that an Assassin could easily track into at least three of the listed Ascended types (besides the BIG boss and the little boss) depending on character personality: Vindicare, Death Cultist and possibly Desperado.

Can't wait to see more details obviously. Oh the suspense, it is YUMMY!

... and Mechanicus -> Sage (Leximechanic), and Cleric to Crusader (and anybody else to that one since all i know about them is they apparently like to crusade, hitting things with other things, and carrying big assed shields... seems clericy), etc.

While I would love to see that, I really don't expect to. I think the career system is entrenched and inflexible. I don't even see Ascended careers for all the branches of the existing careers... indeed going solely by the names most seem to build off one of the two (or more) branches for each career. This is in keeping with the non-branching careers in Rogue Trader and it's one development I didn't like in RT. (Of course, I'm biased. I want to see the entire career system scrapped.)

Still, I won't judge until I see the book. I might be totally off base. It's happened before.

Jinkies!

Ok, these are seriously great news, nice that you feed as with first obvious question (what careers are in), now I´m looking forward to preview Influence rules (I also hope for some hints on Ascesion-scale Contacts and Resources update:)). Plus revealing of other Dark Heresy upcomings mentioned.

Man, I can't WAIT to get this in my hands... like every other DH book that comes out! lengua.gif

I hope the Magos has some really awesome powers... because Ad Mech rules. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I must state that, while I did enjoy multiclassing in 3.5, I am enjoying the hidden flexability of the DH career path system. I'm unsure why you dislike it, but would like to hear someone else state their view on the system

Based on discussion elsewhere, Lucius would prefer an entirely classless system. Whether that it actually more flexible is a debate for another thread.

Hmmm 256 pages.. as in 2 to the power of 8 pages? No one else find that suspicious?preocupado.gif

Seriously, looks good. I want to know WHEN DO WE GET IT? babeo.gif

I'd like it that characters have an option to twist their character in another direction if they want to with this...

System & sub-sector wide conspiracies? BRING IT ON!!!

Maybe we´ll get something solid on Servants of Twilight and Sleepers of Solomon...

The classes themselves are fine, however the arbitrary limits of the ranks are a bit annoying

I'm fairly certain that the Sleepers of Solomon is anouther name/refference for the Dreaming Dead of Solomon.

Or it is hyper-istvaanist cell behind them with some realy bad plans.... Either way they are thought to be, wait for it, legendary. So pretty dangerous.
