Old Republic Ships

By Rozial, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey. I run a small RPG review site and in honor of Star Wars month I'm releasing a bit of Star Wars content every day. Today I released 15 ships from the Old Republic era (Mandalorian Wars-The Great War in SWTOR).

I just wanted to let you all know in case you were interested in the specs of some ships. Feel free to comment there or here if you have any suggestions for what I should change on the ships to make them more accurate.

You can find the post with the ships here.

I think you might have made a mistake on the weapons loadout of the Dynamic. You've got 4 weapons mounts, including 2 dual medium turbolasers on a sil 4 freighter.

Looking a little further I'm seeing a few mistakes. Needs a little editing.

Stuff listed as a freighter when it's obviously not, fire arcs missing from a few weapons listings, and many ships seem not to have a backup hyperdrive.

Valor class cruiser has 10 hard points?

Dynamic has better overall stats than anything being used today.

I think you've done great work, and I think designing ships is sort of a thankless task. So many conflicting opinions, and it's never possible to please everyone. Please don't take this criticism as an attack, it's meant to be constructive.

Here we go:

  • D-5 Mantis: Complement of 2 is OK, pilot & copilot? or pilot and engineer? Passenger capacity should be 4-6 (Mako, Gault, Torian, Blizz, Skadge, 2V-R8, and possibly HK and/or Treek). This is just a personal preference, but given the fluff about using weapons for "larger-classed vessels" I'd probably put light turbolasers or long-nosed lasers in place of the three quad heavy blasters
  • Defender -class light corvette: Shouldn't the hull type be 'corvette?' All of the SWTOR ships are very large, but this really needs to be Sil 5 for me. I think it probably masses quite a bit more than a Gozanti, for comparison. Also, the weapons on the SWTOR models are twin gun-mounts, and given that they have the same fire arc, I would probably just make them linked. Passenger capacity should be higher, as well. Think about all the people the Consular hauls around (though I'm not sure where they all sleep).
  • Dynamic -class freighter: As Spatula mentioned, your Dynamic is severely over-gunned. You might make a case for the Ebon Hawk being so heavily armed, but that ship shouldn't be considered representative of the class. I'd drop the handling and hard points by two each. Also, what's up with the rarity? Is that supposed to represent rarity for the Galactic Civil War timeline? I ask because they probably weren't nearly that rare when "new."
  • X70-B Phantom: I would make the laser cannons and missile launchers linked. With no gunner and only one pilot, there's not much point in having them as separate weapon systems. The stat line for the Phantom is pretty similar to that of the Fury -class. Given the fluff about how cutting-edge and radical it was, I'd expect it to be a bit better
  • Fury- class Interceptor: Same as Phantom for guns and missiles
  • XS Stock freighter: Encumbrance is very light for a "freighter" this size. This is another ship that should be Sil 5, given that it's about twice the size of a VCX-100. Weapons should be twin cannons in a dorsal-mounted turret (fire arc all), and twin cannons in a port-mounted turret (fire arc forward, port, aft)
  • Thranta -class corvette: The Thranta -class War Cruiser was a different type of ship, at least according to Wookieepedia. I understand that the SWTOR ships had a sizable hangar but I've always thought of them as Sil 5, much like the CR90/CR92.

I'm not familiar-enough with the other ships to comment.

Thanks so much for the feedback. A lot of the information I use to make these ships is from Wookiepedia and the Old Republic Encyclopedia so some of their stats are a bit off from the games. It's hard to find a cohesive list of what these ships do. The pricing and rarity for these ships is taking into account finding one in a like-new condition in the galactic civil war era since that is where the setting is focused. I admit the dynamic might be overpowered but a big problem I've noticed is that a lot of the technology in the Old Republic era seems to outclass it's modern counterparts. It often feels like the galactic civil war era is a downgrade from the old republic. I will try to incorporate all these stat recommendations into the ships. The silhouettes are always hard to determine because silhouettes in the game don't follow the most linear path. With the XS freighter I made it a 4 because it looks about the same size as the millennium falcon which is also a 4. It seems almost anything of a freighter build is a silhouette 4. The Defender being a corvette means I probably should make it a 5. I'll make sure any of the minor edit errors are handled. Thanks again for all the feedback. Throughout the month I'll be releasing a variety of content on my site and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Next Tuesday I have a bunch of UNSC vehicles from Halo prepared. I posted a decent amount a while back and have since made modifications to them based on the critiques. I'll also release Covenant vehicles later this month.
