Why is Countermeasures large ship only? Would you use it on an any small bases if you could?

By Turbo Toker, in X-Wing

This is one of those cards that FFG seems to have been too conservative with, it has this needless large ship only restriction on it.

Most small bases want Autothrusters or in case of Vader or Corran, Engine Upgrade. Miranda wants Advanced SLAM, Phantom wants ACD. TIE/SF's want Lightweight.

What small bases would countermeasures even be good on? Omega Leader I suppose, when being shot by multiple targets and to ditch a TL from something that can modify its dice. What else?

Interceptors maybe? They'll always want Autothrusters, but their second mod slot is usually up for grabs.

Sycks? With Mindlink and Countermeasures they could have 4+ agility, focus, evade and 4 health. That's not shabby. Countermeasures could be a way to soften the fact that Serrisu's ability doesn't work on herself.

Well it isn't noticed that much and is taken less than Expert Handling. However that is kind of the issue since Target lock isn't that bad of a token as you can reposistion out of arc. So even if countermeasures did lose the large ship only restriction I doubt Interceptors or even Serrisu would still carry it. Stealth device would be better as you can get more than one use out of it assuming the dice don't betray you.

I think it's more for the sake of lore. Large ships (and in reality, non-combat air vehicles like passenger planes) carry countermeasures to make up for their lack of agility and inability to make evasive maneuvers.

If palob could take countermeasures it would be broken. Denying your enemy focus and target lock every turn seems very strong. Especially if it's mindlinked, and has multiple focus/stolen evades rolling an extra green die. It could be 5 greens through the rock at r3

.. Then I'd give him a scavenger crane to pick up countermeasures again to use the next turn. Pair it with a cluster bossk to make sure whatever is close by Gets one- shot. Seems super good

Better question- Why is Reinforced Deflectors large ship only...

Because then you put it on Ten Numb with Mangler and he is OP

I'd put Countermeasures on TIE/D Defenders in a heartbeat. I've often found they take one turn of serious fire before they can really take advantage of their control cannons. Countermeasures would help a lot in that scenario and do a lot to save them from alpha strike lists, which are often problematic.

Yeah, Defenders are probably the best use for it - it's going to be better than Stealth Device for them in many cases, even for /x7s.

But yeah, it would probably be balanced on small base ships.

No problem with Countermeasures unless the ship so equiped is Agi 3. Tons of scenario play with VIP/ Recon/ Bomber ships with this Upgrade. Also cost reduced to 2.

Ten Numb OP? Yaaa.... Gonna say that probably wouldn't be the case considering he is overcosted by a couple points, and reinforced deflectors probably are as well. :P

A Countermeasures Tomax Bren would be fun...if you were the guy playing it.

edit: and he could recover a used up Mod.

I agree with you, but EH is great on a B-Wing pilot like Ten Numb. It's not always easy to get out of arc with him.

Countermeasures on Biggs, perhaps?

No integrated Astromech, then, and 3 points. It's probably a meta call.

Actually, I think reinforced deflectors are maybe the most underrated upgrade in the game. I've seen it recover 5 damage on a Ghost, which is absolutely stupendous for less than the price of a single shield upgrade. It is somewhat situational, sure, but even if it works once, it has paid for itself. What's really holding it back is the limit on which ships can use it well.

Just give him Expert Handling. Sure you lose out on mindlink but it still denies TL and will work more than once.

It probably is underrated, especially with Uboat Alphas and Fenn Rau consistently dealing out 4 to 5 damage with ease. But like you said, it only has a few spots available to it, and those ships almost always have better build options.

If B-wings could get it, they might get their foot back in the door. 3 points still seems a little steep to me, even if small ships could equip it, but I thought Countermeasures were overcosted for a long time until I saw how great they could be when Dengaroo was a thing, so I could just be wrong.

...But thinking about it now... perhaps that was an anomaly and Countermeasures are in actuality overcosted except in scenarios when you can strap them on for "free" in a list that is 12 points more efficient then it should be!

All I know is both Reinforced Deflectors and Countermeasures are fun cards that I'd like to see on the table more. They seem to be falling short in some way though currently (although Countermeasures can do some pretty cool stuff with Scavenger Crane).
